How much does it cost to move across country?

Figuring out cross country moving costs

There’s no doubt that a cross country move is more expensive than a local move or a move to a neighboring state. But how much does it actually cost? The answer to that question can be difficult to reach since it depends on many factors. In addition to paying for a moving company (which can come with a wide range of prices), you’ll also need to account for things like hotel stays, fuel stops and meal breaks. Get a general idea of how much you can expect to spend by comparing cross country move quotes and looking at average costs for those other expenses.

Budget® Truck Rental Gas Mileage

Budget® Truck Rental Gas Mileage

What is the gas mileage of a Budget® truck?

According to their website, Budget trucks get the following gas mileage:

  • 12-foot truck: 8-14 miles per gallon
  • 16-foot truck: 6-10 miles per gallon
  • 26-foot truck: 8-10 miles per gallon (diesel fuel)

Keep in mind that these estimates are for empty trucks, so a fully loaded truck would get fewer miles per gallon.

Throw it out before moving out

Do you have too much stuff to move?

Does the thought of moving every item in your home seem daunting? Maybe that’s because you have more stuff than you need! With a little time and effort, you can pare down your belongings to a more manageable amount before the packing process starts. Don’t spend time, energy and money packing, moving and unpacking unwanted objects. Instead, find a decluttering method that works for you, and then sell, donate, recycle or throw out the things you no longer need.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 532,000 people moved to Texas from another state in 2016 — an average of 1,400 every day! Why are so many new people calling the Lone Star State home? Economic growth, low taxes and below average cost of living are the biggest draws. It’s a great place to move to find opportunities, raise a family or retire.
