Getting Ready to Load: FAQs on Preparing Yourself and Your Stuff

What Supplies Should I Get?

These items will come in handy during the loading process:

  • Moving blankets
  • Tarp or plastic sheeting
  • Moving straps or dollies
  • Rope, ratchet straps, etc.
  • Work gloves

How Much Help Will I Need?

Depending on the size of the home and how much time you want to spend, you’ll want to have 1-3 extra people on hand to help load. Not only will it take some of the work off your shoulders, but it will also make the process more efficient. Ask a few people to remain on the truck while others are carrying items. These people can work on stacking everything, and nobody has to stop bringing things from the house!

What Should I do Before the Equipment Arrives?

There are a few things you’ll need to take care of before the big day. One of the biggest is to measure large pieces of furniture and find the best door to use when moving them. You’ll also need to clear an obstacle-free route from the door to the moving equipment, and put protective covering on the floors. Finally, be sure to set aside any items you’re taking with you, so they don’t get loaded by mistake.

How Do I Set Up U-Pack® Equipment?

The ReloCube® won’t require any prep work, but you’ll need to do a few things in the trailer before you load. Start by setting up the loading ramp, and then lay a tarp or plastic wrap on the floor of the trailer to protect against dust and dirt.

What Should I Wear?

Safety is a big factor when choosing what to wear while loading belongings. Avoid clothing that may get snagged while carrying furniture out of doorways, and always wear durable, supportive footwear with a good grip. You’ll also want to put on leather gloves when handling large, heavy objects with sharp edges.

How Do I Move Heavy Items?

Whether you’re carrying an item or using a moving dolly, there are a few rules to follow. Prevent injury by lifting with your legs, not your back. And don’t be afraid to ask for help! A good rule of thumb is to keep boxes under 40 pounds so they can be lifted safely. Use this guide for more tips on lifting boxes and other heavy items.

When using a moving dolly, follow these tips:

  • Make sure to center the blades and slide them in entirely under the load
  • Keep the load balanced by placing heavier items on the bottom
  • Don’t load things on the dolly higher than chest-level
  • Always walk with the dolly in front of you
  • Have someone help support the load when going up or down a ramp or steps

How to Load Items in the Moving Equipment

  1. Load the largest and heaviest furniture, appliances and boxes first. Place them against the walls to help evenly distribute the weight throughout the truck/trailer/container.
  2. Stack items from floor to ceiling, putting heavy items on the bottom and lighter ones on the top. Load tight, like a jigsaw puzzle — fill all space to avoid shifting in transit. Use things like pillows, rugs and bags of linens to fill any open space.
  3. Each tier should be close to the trailer/ReloCube ceiling before beginning the next tier. Tie each one off with ratchet straps/rope to secure.
  4. Place fragile items or awkwardly shaped items on last and secure tightly (make sure to mark them “fragile”).
  5. Place lightweight, loose items like small rolled up rugs, bundled mops and brooms on top.
  6. If moving in a trailer, take down the ramp and install the bulkhead. If using a ReloCube, lock the door when you’re finished loading.

Additional loading tips

  • Place things like wrapped pictures, mirrors, headboards and footboards upright between mattresses for extra protection.
  • Make sure items that could potentially cause damage are not loaded against fabric or wood furniture. For example, a piece with protruding metal could puncture a sofa or mattress.
  • Avoid loading thin-legged tables on the bottom; they may not be able to handle the weight of items loaded on top.
  • Avoid loading furniture against other furniture or truck walls without padding (furniture pads, paper pads, cardboard, etc.).
  • Keep gas-operated items like lawn mowers and weed eaters on the trailer or Cube floor. Cover them with a tarp or plastic sheeting and away from fabric items (after you drain flammable fluids).
  • When moving motorcycles, riding lawn mowers or small ATVs, use sturdy ratchet straps to secure the items and ensure they stay in place during transit. If moving in a trailer, we recommend nailing wooden blocks into the floor for added bracing. All fuel must be completely drained.

Unloading at the new home

Once the equipment arrives, you’ll have three business days to unload your belongings. Unhook the straps as you go, and take care when bringing items inside, so you don’t accidentally damage the walls or floors. Want tips on sprucing up the new place?
