Cheap Moving Companies

April 20th, 2012 - 8:14 AM

It’s Flashback Friday! Each week we take a look back at a post that’s been helpful to our readers in the past. Today’s flashback is for all of those folks looking for ways to move on a budget. It’s all about cheap moving companies. Happy Friday!

Don’t we wish that all moving companies were cheap moving companies – especially in this economy? I think yes. But, here’s the big question: Is cheaper always better? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.

Sometimes when it comes to cheap moving companies, you get what you pay for.

Typically when my husband lovingly reminds me that “you get what you pay for,” it’s not because the trash bags I just bought for two dollars less than the name brand were so wonderful; it’s because they busted open and spilled trash all over the kitchen floor. I’m known (and heckled) for looking for ways to save. And through the years I’ve learned that it’s ok to make saving money a priority, but if you end up losing in the end, the savings are rarely worth it.

So, let’s move on to something I know a little more about than trash bags (obviously): cheap moving companies. All of my “you get what you pay for” talk isn’t to say that when you buy something at a cheap price, it’s not a good deal. Sometimes it is. U-Pack Moving is a great example of that. When you get a moving quote and compare prices, you’ll see that the price is actually similar to renting a truck and driving it yourself. Except with U-Pack, you don’t have to drive. (yes!)

You’ll also find that U-Pack is significantly less expensive than hiring full-service movers. It’s what I like to call the “happy-medium” between truck rental and full-service movers. This probably goes without saying, but it’s extremely rare that you’ll ever find full-service movers referred to as “cheap moving companies.” If you do, I recommend continuing the research; no one wants to end up experiencing something a lot more traumatic than the trash on my kitchen floor.

Here’s good news: If using a cheap moving company is high on your priority list, you can do U-Pack’s “you pack, we drive” service, pair it with labor services to help with packing and loading, and still come up with an economical solution.

It’s kind of like saving two dollars on the trash bags, and not having to clean up a mess.
