6 Warning Signs Your Moving Cost May Go Up

Warning signs are important. When you’re driving down unfamiliar roads, it’s nice to know what’s coming. The “stop sign ahead” sign warns you of an approaching intersection, and the “curves in road” sign prompts you to slow down. They’re all designed to let you know what to expect up ahead.

Just like driving an unfamiliar road, moving comes with some unknowns that can end up costing you more than you anticipated. While there aren’t literal warning signs along the way, there are definitely some signals you can watch for to help avoid the unforeseen.  Here are a few things to watch for:

1. You’re a hoarder.

I’m not necessarily talking about people with compulsive hoarding disorder, but I am talking about those of us with “collections” or whose closets and garages and cupboards are packed full of junk. If you’re the type who hangs on to things – especially lots and lots of things – your move could end up being more expensive than you thought. No matter how you slice it, moving more costs more. Even with the most cost-efficient moving services, more stuff simply takes up more room.

We recommend cleaning out your entire home and getting rid of unwanted items before your move. You can donate or have a moving sale, but don’t pay to move it if you don’t want it. With a moving service like U-Pack, just getting rid of a little bit can make a big difference. With U-Pack, you pay for the space you use, so using even one linear foot less can lower the cost of your move pretty significantly. Check out the “per foot rate” included in your U-Pack moving quote to see how much you can save by downsizing.

2. You got an in-home estimate.

If you got an in-home estimate, you’re probably dealing with a full-service mover. While it may seem like a fairly accurate way to calculate your moving cost, it can be difficult. In-home estimates are based on the weight of the items you’re moving. While they can give a good guess based on experience, it's very difficult to be accurate Your price can go up with even a few heavy items.

Then, of course, rates for full-services movers include all of the services they provide, like packing, loading, unloading, crating, long-carries, etc. While getting someone to do it all is nice, it can also be expensive. If you don’t want to spend money on services you don’t necessarily need, you can choose a moving service that allows you to do some of the work on your own. It’s an excellent way to save.

When you get a moving quote from U-Pack, your price is based on size, instead of weight (weight doesn’t factor into your moving cost with U-Pack). With U-Pack, you pack and load (but don’t drive). If you need some help moving the big stuff, we’ll gladly refer you to a nationwide network of experienced movers to assist.

3. You have a storage building, attic, or basement.

This goes along with the “it costs more to move more” thought. When you were trying to figure out what size moving truck you needed, you probably selected the size based on the number of rooms in your home; but did you consider “extra” spaces like the attic, storage building, and basement (or all the stuff at your mother-in-law’s house)?  For example, if you’re moving a small three bedroom home, you may have decided on a 20 foot truck. But if you forgot about the full storage building across town, you may be adding a room or more of stuff. Running out of space on a rental truck may mean paying more for an added tow trailer (or a second truck), and if you’re using a full-service mover, it may mean more time for the packers and loaders, and more weight.

U-Pack takes that worry away with flexible moving; load into the space you need, and pay only for the space you use. If you want to get a good idea of how much space you’ll need, just click over to this room-by-room estimator. Don’t forget to include the items in your storage units, attic, or basement.

4. You’re moving at the end of the month.

When it comes to moving, there are peak times that cost more. For example, summertime and the end of the month are popular times to move – and when demand is high, prices can be, too. Avoid paying more for your move by scheduling around peak times. For the best rates, choose a move date that’s mid-week, mid-month, and not around a holiday.

When you click to get a moving quote, we’ll automatically give you the cheapest date available during your time frame.

5. You use “found” boxes.

Dumpster diving for boxes may seem like a great idea at the time, but those boxes can cost you. I know, I know. Professional-grade boxes can be expensive. But you know what stinks more than buying boxes? Damage.

If you use boxes that aren’t designed for moving, you may be setting yourself up to encounter damage during transit. These types of boxes are disposable for a reason. If you found them sitting outside your local grocery store, or the corner liquor store gladly gave them away, it’s likely because they don’t want them anymore. If they’re no longer sturdy enough to transport commercial goods, they aren’t fit for your belongings either.

If you use professional moving supplies (that you can buy discounted in bundles here), you’re helping ensure your stuff travels across the country safely. We recommend it. Every order comes with FREE shipping.

6. You’re driving through a gas hot spot.

It’s no secret that moving trucks are gas guzzlers. I mean, they only get 8-12 miles per gallon. If gas prices seem reasonable in your area, have you checked the places you’ll be driving through? According to the gas price heat map, there are counties, regions, and states with higher gas prices. In Arkansas where I live, if you go just one county over, fuel prices jump 20 cents per gallon! That can really add up in a moving truck.

You can avoid paying at the pump for your move by moving with U-Pack. U-Pack delivers your stuff right to your door, so you don’t have to drive or buy fuel. It’s a great way to move; you don’t have to stress about driving a big bulky truck, and you won’t have to go broke at the fuel pump either. Win-win. Get a moving quote from U-Pack here.
