Moving Safety Tips

Prepare for a Successful Move
Moving-related injuries are not uncommon, but most can be avoided with proper preparation. Avoid the pain and hassle of an injury with these moving safety tips.

  • Make sure boxes aren’t too heavy. As a general rule of thumb, keep boxes under 50 pounds. Heavy items like books should be packed into small boxes to make them easier to pick up and carry into the moving truck.
  • Keep an emergency first aid kit handy. You may need bandages, pain reliever, or other first aid supplies. 
  • Look for danger zones. These are the things/areas that could be a hazard when carrying things in and out. Think steps, rugs, large furniture, etc. If possible, clear the danger zones before moving day—if it’s not possible, at the very least, make workers aware of potential hazards by hanging signs warning to take extra care in those areas.
  • Clear obstacles. The walking path should be clear of boxes, furniture and any other obstacles that could get in the way on moving day.
  • Make a plan for children and pets. It’s sometimes difficult to keep children and/or furry friends out of harm’s way (i.e. out from under your feet while you’re carrying heavy boxes and furniture), so make sure they have a safe place to stay on moving day.
  • Gather supplies to help you move. There are a few supplies designed to help take some of the weight off of you. If you’re moving heavy boxes, furniture, or appliances, it’s a good idea of have a dolly ready. You may also consider using forearm forklifts for the large stuff (like mattresses).   
  • Wear proper clothing and footwear. Wear comfortable, closed-toe footwear with rubber soles (to prevent slipping), and watch out for baggy clothing that can snag on things. You may also want to avoid wearing jewelry as it could snag, and/or scratch furniture.
  • Practice proper lifting techniques. Lift with your legs, not your back. This means that as you lift boxes, squat rather than bending at the waist.
  • Stretch before you start moving. Get your muscles ready to work! Windmill your arms to warm up your shoulders and arms. Do some bends to touch your toes, take a short walk to warm up your legs. Your body will do lots of work moving, so make sure it is ready!
  • Wear sunscreen! You’ll be in and out all day, so make sure to protect your skin. The last thing you want before a long drive across the country is a surprise sunburn.  
  • Ask for help when you need it.  It’s important not to get in over your head when it comes to loading and unloading. Call your friends and/or family and make sure you have plenty of help when it comes to loading the heavy stuff. 
  • Stay hydrated and eat. Take breaks for water and snacks to make sure your body is fueled up and ready!
