What is the gas mileage of a Budget® truck?
According to their website, Budget trucks get the following gas mileage:
- 12-foot truck: 8-14 miles per gallon
- 16-foot truck: 6-10 miles per gallon
- 26-foot truck: 8-10 miles per gallon (diesel fuel)
Keep in mind that these estimates are for empty trucks, so a fully loaded truck would get fewer miles per gallon.
Fuel tank size
Along with the fuel usage, consider the size of the tanks. Rental trucks have larger tanks than personal vehicles, so you’ll be paying more at each stop to fill up. According to the company’s website, here are the different Budget fuel tank sizes:
- 12-foot truck: 35-gallon tank
- 16-foot truck: 33-gallon tank
- 26-foot truck: 50-gallon tank (diesel fuel)
Calculating Budget truck gas mileage
Why is fuel usage important? Because fuel isn’t included in the cost to rent a truck, and the extra cost of fuel can significantly impact your moving budget. In fact, if you’re traveling long distance, it’s entirely possible that fuel could as much double the price of your move — turning an economical option into something more expensive.
Want to determine the overall fuel expenses for a move? Take the distance between the origin and the destination (in miles) and divide by the truck’s average miles per gallon. Then multiply that by the average fuel cost. It looks like this:
- Miles (divided by) Average Miles-Per-Gallon = Gallons of Fuel.
- Then, take Gallons of Fuel (times) Average Fuel Cost = Cost of Gas for the Move.

Concerned about more than the fuel costs?
Fuel isn’t the only concern when using a rental truck for your move. There’s also the drive, towing, costs and more to consider. Find out everything to expect with a rental truck to make sure it’s right for you.
