When planning your move, it’s important to get quotes and create a budget early on. While you’re doing this, there are some essential questions to ask and some important things to consider, to make certain you don’t get stuck with moving charge that you weren’t planning for. Today I’ll give you some quick tips to help keep your budget right on track.
First, like I mentioned earlier, get moving quotes (starting with a U-Pack quote!) Once you have the price in writing, ask these questions:
- What is NOT included in the price (fuel, sales tax, liability coverage, etc.)?
- What if I need more space/weight than estimated on my quote?
- What is the cancellation fee?
- Is a down-payment or deposit required?
When you know the answers to those questions, consider these things:
Do you need boxes and supplies?
Getting boxes from the dumpster behind the grocery store may seem like the “cheap” way to do it, but it’s not ideal. Do you need extra space?
U-Pack’s rates are based on the amount of space your shipment occupies in the trailer or the number of ReloCubes you use. So, if your belongings aren’t loaded well, your price can increase. Packing the trailer high and tight means your shipment takes up less space (and travels better). Take a look at U-Pack’s loading tips to make sure you make the best use of your space. If you need more space than you reserved, you can use more. Just add the per-foot adjustment rate included in your moving quote.
Does your move require more than one stop?
If you have stuff at your home and at a storage facility, and you are unable to consolidate it all to one location before moving day, it means an extra stop for the moving service. Make sure to make the moving service aware of the situation. An extra stop likely means additional charges.
Do you need expedited transit or a guaranteed delivery day?
Being flexible with your delivery day is a money-saver, but that’s not always an option.
