Easy Food for Moving Day that will Give You Energy

Along with my job at U-Pack, I also teach aerobics. Before a workout, I always eat a snack to give my body energy. Preparing your body for moving is no different because moving is quite a workout! So what are the best foods to eat on moving day for extra energy?

Food For Moving Day – What to eat?

Protein and carb mix. For optimal energy on moving day, you’ll want to eat something that contains both proteins and carbs. Carbohydrates will give you the energy you need, and the protein will help your body use the fuel properly. Proteins are found in foods like meat, poultry, soybeans, peanuts, seafood, and dairy. Carbohydrates are founds in foods such as whole grains (like crackers, bread, pretzels, pasta), fruit, and potatoes. Some good things to eat on moving day that would be protein/carb combos are bananas and peanut butter, crackers and cheese, or fruit and yogurt. If fresh food isn’t an option, you could use an energy bar, but be sure to find one with 25-40 grams of carbs and about 10 grams of protein.

Beverages. When moving, you will want to hydrate properly. In the days leading up to the move, drink extra water. If you are a regular caffeine drinker, don’t cut it cold turkey as you may have some adverse side effects such as withdrawal headaches. However, limit your caffeine consumption leading up to the move. During the move, drink water! Avoid caffeine and warm drinks as they speed through your system. Nobody wants to make 100 potty breaks during the day. If you need a “jolt” try drinking some 100% fruit juice. The natural sugars will give you energy without the lingering effects of caffeine and processed sugary drinks. But at the end of the day, water is always your best bet for hydrating on moving day.

Small meals. Moving will likely take all day, so you will want to eat several small meals during the day. Think of it like a car. If you fill your car up, you can only go as far as the tank of gas. When moving all day, you will only have energy from your last meal. When the fuel (energy) from your last meal runs out, you will feel fatigued. Stay away from that tired feeling by eating several smaller meals during moving day.

Foods to avoid. You will want to avoid heavy meals on moving day (think about the Thanksgiving food coma!). Big meals spike your blood sugar and make you sleepy. You will also want to avoid any foods that irritate your system, such as dairy or high-fat foods. Even though they seem like easy food to grab on moving day, fast food and gas station snacks aren’t good food for moving day. Neither are sugary drinks. You want to give your body good things to eat on moving day so you feel your best.

Just remember these tips and you will be energized and ready for moving! Just take a few minutes to prep for moving day food, and you will be ready for the day. If you have some more suggestions for the best food to eat on moving day for extra energy, just leave a comment!
