February 2nd, 2013 - 8:24 PM

Congratulations on your recent marriage! Now that you’re married, you will soon face the overwhelming task of merging two lives together. There are a lot of little details to take care of. Luckily for you, I have the ultimate list of what you should change after you get married.

How do I change my name after marriage?

This is the most popular question that’s asked after marriage. Changing your name after marriage isn’t hard at all! You must have your marriage license in order to change your last name. Visit your local Social Security Administration office to apply for a new social security card. You will keep the same social security number, but your last name will be different. You should get your new card within 10 business days.

Once you have your new social security card, you can get a new driver’s license. You must have your new social security card and your marriage license to do get a new driver’s license with your new last name. There could be a small fee for changing your name on your driver’s license. The fee will vary from state to state.

After you get your new driver’s license with your new last name on it, you can change your name on your bank account. If you’re setting up a joint bank account, just go into your local branch and bring your new driver’s license and marriage license with you. Bring your spouse with you just in case they have to sign some paperwork with you. Read more about the pros and cons of a joint bank account here.
