Saving Money for Moving

Saving to Move

Dave Ramsey says “It doesn't matter what you make – you can save money. It just has to become a big enough priority to you.” Saving for your upcoming move is important. You can find plenty of information out there about saving money on your move, but I’m going to show you how you can save money before the move! By taking a few easy steps, you can easily save for moving.

How to Start Saving for Moving

In order to start saving, you need to have a goal in mind. You should get a rough estimate of the amount you need to save. You can easily do this by getting a free moving quote to see how much your move will cost. Of course, you will need some extra money for your travel, but getting a quote will help you plan for saving.

Next, take a look at some places where you can easily cut back on spending. Here are some ideas:

  • Take a look at discretionary expenses. This is the stuff you can do without. Are there magazine subscriptions you can cancel? Can you cut back on eating out? What about cancelling the premium channels on your cable bill? Take a look at some places where you can cut things out. When we were saving for our move, we stopped eating lunch out. We were able to save lots of money by taking a brown bag lunch!
  • Cut back on your utilities. You can save money by doing simple things like flipping off the lights and not running the water while you are brushing your teeth. Unplug appliances and electronics when you aren’t using them, too. Then take the savings and put them back for your move. Smartmoney.com offers some great tips for lowering your electric bill.
  • Clip coupons. Look for coupons to use on your everyday purchases. Coupons.com is a great place to look. You can print off coupons for the items you are going to buy. Saving 40 cents at a time may not seem like much, but it can really add up!
  • Have a sale! Before you move, you will want to get rid of stuff you don’t want. So make some money while you are at it! You can save money for moving by taking stuff to consignment shops, having a garage sale, or even just hosting an online sale! I took some clothes I didn’t want and made a Facebook album listing the item details (brand, size, condition) and the price. My friends commented on the items they wanted. Then I made arrangements for them to come buy the items from me. That is a great way to start saving for moving. Check out this post about how to have a successful moving sale.
  • Take a second job. Now, don’t panic. It doesn’t have to be a full-time or even a part-time job. But if you can find some odd jobs (like mowing your neighbor’s grass or babysitting the kids down the street), you can quickly make extra money to save for your move. Just let the people around you know you are looking for extra opportunities. In college, I helped a friend-of-a-friend pack and seal her wedding invitations. She paid me 50 cents per invitation, and I was able to make $100 on her 200 invitations in an afternoon.

If you can just do a couple of these tasks, you can easily save money for moving. Saving for moving doesn’t have to be stressful; just make saving a priority and make some small changes in your life. You will have that money saved in no time!
