Moving Tips and Tricks from the TV Show "FRIENDS"

These days, channels like "DIY" and "HGTV" offer lots of TV programs that teach you how to flip a house, make quick fixes to sell your home in a month, and even decorate your new place like a celebrity on a modest budget. With all of that activity, who has time for a regular old sitcom?

Here's something that might surprise you— I've found several moving tips and tricks from the popular TV show "FRIENDS" that can help you through a cross country move. Who knew? Despite endless teasing from my friends and coworkers, this die-hard fan decided it was time to share "What I've Learned about Moving from FRIENDS". Check out these wise quotes and apply the hidden lessons to make your move much less stressful!

Monica: "Honey, that's a great idea nailing the boxes to the floor."
Chandler: "I didn't nail the boxes to the floor."
Monica: "Oh, so you CAN move them!"
The takeaway: a little elbow grease goes a long way. If you're up for packing and loading, U-Pack can handle the driving— at a rate that's comparable to truck rental. You'll conserve funds and still be able to travel to your new home in the comfort of your own vehicle.

Joey: (In reference to moving into an apartment alone) "I thought it'd be great, you know? To have some time alone with my thoughts... turns out, I don't have as many thoughts as you'd think."
The takeaway: Just like Joey, things may not always turn out like you had planned. Be sure to have room in your moving budget for the unexpected— what if the utilities can't be turned on in your new home for a few more days? You may need to stay in a nearby hotel or purchase a few supplies for 'roughing it' in the new house. It's always a good idea to have a Plan B!

Monica: "Whoa. Where you going in those pants? 1982?"
The takeaway: When in doubt, throw it out! One of our favorite moving tips and tricks to point out is that moving is the perfect time for a garage sale. Go through your belongings as you pack and weed out items that are outdated or no longer used, then hold a sale or donate the items to a local charity. An added bonus? Having less stuff just means there's less you have to move!

Chandler: "I can handle this. 'Handle' is my middle name…actually, "handle" is the middle of my first name."
The takeaway: Even though moving can be stressful, it's far from impossible. A little planning and organization will help you streamline the process— and if you go U-Pack, you can even work in a little sightseeing fun on the drive to your new home!

Joey: "Hey Pheebs, you wanna help?"
Phoebe: "Oh, I wish I could, but I really don't want to."
The takeaway: Another of my favorite moving tips and tricks— recruit friends and family to help you pack. If they need a little persuading, order a few pizzas as a thank-you (while still staying within your budget).

Monica: "Look, Joey feels really bad for what happened. He thinks you hate him. He wants to move to Vermont. "
Ross: "I don't hate him. You know what; I'll go talk to him. It's not his fault."
Monica: "Thank you. He already asked me where he could exchange his dollars for 'Vermont money'."
The takeaway: Whether it's before or after moving day, schedule some time to get to know your new neighborhood. It may seem like a foreign country at first, but it will likely only takes a few days of exploring to get your bearings. Some locations you may want to scope out in advance: the best parks, nearby shopping malls, the kids' new schools, and local restaurant favorites.

I could go on for a while with the FRIENDS quotes, but I should probably save those for another day. If it's moving tips and tricks that you're after, we're always happy to help! Leave a comment, 'Ask the Experts', or call 800-413-4799 for assistance.
