Moving Insurance vs. Liability Coverage

September 15th, 2008 - 1:40 PM

Did you know that most Americans move 5 to 7 times during their lifetime?  This means we move more than any other culture. If you do your research and chose a company with a record of safe driving and a low claims ratio, and if you take good care in packing and loading, the likelihood of damage is very low. But, as with most things in life, anything is possible. So, it's important to know how your household goods are covered while they're in transit.

When it comes to moving with U-Pack, your price includes two types of liability coverage.

  • Catastrophic Liability:  This type of liability coverage covers your household goods should the moving trailer or ReloCube become involved in a catastrophic event such as an accident or fire.
  • Carrier Negligence Liability:  This type of liability coverage covers your household goods should they sustain damage due to carrier negligence.

We encourage you to read about U-Pack Liability Coverage in full detail here.

Note that the coverage included in your U-Pack price is liability coverage rather than moving insurance.

You'll find that most (if not all) do-it-yourself moving companies offer liability coverage rather than moving insurance. This, of course, is because the customer does the packing, loading, and unloading.  If you do find a DIY moving company that offers moving insurance (rather than calling it liability coverage), it's important to ask questions. Most come with specific requirements and cover only catastrophic events or damage caused by an external cause – not improper packing. Typically, when moving insurance is offered, an approved labor provider must do the packing, loading, and unloading.

We recommend contacting your homeowner's or renter's insurance company to determine if your current policy covers your belongings while they're in transit, or to see if you can add a rider.

How to help your self-move travel safely

While packing and loading your own belongings is an excellent way to save money moving long distance, it's important to follow packing and loading best practices to make sure your belongings travel to their destination safe and sound. U-Pack has compiled a list of packing tips and loading tips designed to help you with a successful move. One of the most important pieces of advice we can give is to avoid shipping items that you cannot place a value on. Examples of this are expensive artwork, antiques, important papers, etc.

If you have questions about U-Pack liability coverage, including how it differs from moving insurance, we'll be happy to help.
