Using moving pads for furniture

When it comes to moving furniture and other fragile belongings such as lamps, small appliances, and mirrors, furniture pads provide the best protection at the best price. As the most economical packing option, using them is a great way to protect your belongings from damage and scratches. Let’s explore more about what moving furniture pads are, how to use them, where to buy them and what to do with them after your move.

What are furniture pads?

Moving pads are a type of packing supply made entirely of paper. They are triple-ply, providing three layers of padding. Measuring at 48” x 72”, they’re big enough to cover small appliances or pieces of furniture (such as nightstands). You can trim paper padding easily with scissors, and unlike moving blankets, packing tape will easily adhere to the paper furniture pads.  So that way you can wrap your furniture up snug and tight like a gift (or a baked potato!).

You may be familiar with using newspaper or packing paper during your move, but these furniture pads are much thicker and provide additional protection as compared to single-ply paper.

How do you use furniture moving pads?

These moving pads are very versatile. You can use them to pack and protect:

  • Furniture
  • Artwork
  •  Frames
  • Mirrors
  • Lamps
  • Small appliances
  • Other items that need protection from scratches, dirt, dust, or damage

To use furniture padding, start with clean, dry items, so you don't pack any dirt or dust in with your items.

1.Remove any removable pieces. On lamps, this will include the shade and finial, for furniture it may include legs, drawers or hardware. Pack these separately after wrapping them in packing paper.

2.Wrap completely with moving pads. Wrap the piece entirely in the moving pad, paying attention to corners (as they can be damaged and can cause damage to nearby furniture). For sharp corners, you may want to double wrap them.

3.Wrap legs or separate pieces. Use packing tape or plastic stretch wrap to secure the moving pad to the item, completely covering any exposed areas.

For larger pieces, you can tape several furniture pads together to create an even bigger work surface.

What to do with furniture pads after your move

One of the most common questions we hear is “What do I do with these moving pads after I move?” Since they are made of paper, the best use is to recycle them. Your local recycling center can take them, process them, and make them into new post-recycled products. If you don’t have access to recycling centers, furniture pads are also disposable.
