U-Pack Portable Storage Units
Mobile storage options that fit your needs
It’s not unusual for people to need storage in conjunction with a long-distance move. After all, not all moves go directly from point A to point B. Many times people move out of their current house before their new one is ready. And others may take the time to go on vacation before settling in to a new location. No matter the reason, U-Pack® has portable storage solutions to fit your needs.
What are portable storage units?
Portable storage units are containers that are used for storing personal belongings — some people call them mobile storage units. They come in a variety of sizes, can be made from wood or metal, and they’re often used in conjunction with a long-distance move. The size and type of unit varies by company.
Why should I use portable storage?
It’s known for making moving and storage much more convenient. Portable storage units remove the hassle of transferring your belongings multiple times. For example, instead of loading your belongings into a vehicle or rental truck, unloading them at a storage facility, then reversing the process once you’re ready for delivery, your items can remain in the same unit you loaded them into until you’re ready to receive them. Not only is it more convenient, less handling means less chance for damage.
What options are available with U-Pack?
To accommodate a variety of customer needs, U-Pack has two mobile storage options: ReloCubes and moving trailers. Here’s the breakdown:
The ReloCube. The Cube is a custom-built, metal container that is 6’ x 7’ x8’ externally (LWH) and 70” x 82” x 93” internally. It has a loading capacity of 306 cubic feet and is the ideal size to store the contents of a studio apartment or one room of furnishings. You can reserve as many as you need to accommodate your home size. If you have a small move with long-term storage needs, the ReloCube is typically the most affordable route.
The moving trailer. The trailer’s exterior is 28’ x 8’ x 9’ (LWH) and the interior is 324” x 96” x 108”. With a loading capacity of 1,944 cubic feet, it typically holds the contents of a 3 to 4-bedroom home. It’s typically the most affordable route if you have a large home with long-term storage needs.

FAQs about U-Pack movable storage options
What if I need more space?
A perk of U-Pack mobile storage is that additional space is available if you need it. You only pay for the space you use, and we don’t charge by weight. You can reserve as man ReloCubes as you think you need, and only pay for the ones you use. Trailer prices are based on linear feet, down to a 5-foot minimum. Learn more about “pay for the space you use.”
Is it weatherproof?
Yes, both the ReloCube and trailer are designed to protect your belongings from the elements. Keep in mind that they are constructed with ventilation, which could allow moisture or water in extreme weather situations. We recommend following these packing tips, using tarps and wrapping items with moving blankets and/or plastic wrap (based on what is appropriate for your items).
Do you offer climate-controlled storage?
Climate-controlled storage is not available with U-Pack. Though most household goods do not require climate-controlled storage, if you’re concerned about controlling temperatures, we can deliver to a facility of your choice. Just let a U-Pack representative know during your reservation process!
Are there tie-down points to secure my items?
Both trailers and containers include tie-down points (also called logistics tracking) along the walls. These tie-down points allow you to secure your items during transit with rope or straps.
How do my items stay safe during long-term storage?
Your equipment is stored at one of our secure terminals — usually at the service center closest to your origin or destination. For added security, you can lock ReloCubes with your own lock, and keep the key so that you’re the only one with access (3/8” maximum shank diameter).
Most trailers come equipped with a lockable bulkhead that you install and lock with your own padlock when you finish loading. Read more about the bulkhead. You can also place a lock on the trailer while it’s at your location (standard padlock). Before the trailer is picked up, you’ll remove this lock so that the driver can accurately determine the linear footage used. U-Pack will provide a lock for the outside of the trailer while it’s in transit and in storage.
Are my items stored with other people’s stuff?
Whether you use a ReloCube or a trailer, your belongings are not stored or transported with other household goods shipments. If you don’t use all of the space in the trailer we fill the remaining space with commercial freight headed in the same direction. Your items are loaded into the nose of the trailer and are separated with a bulkhead wall.
How long is portable storage available?
To help make storing and relocating easier, you can store your items for as long as necessary, as long as it’s in combination with a long-distance move. Storage fees are charged every 30 days to the credit card placed on file during the booking process, and storage is not pro-rated.
Can I access my stuff while it’s in storage?
Due to liability issues, shipments cannot be accessed while in storage. Considering this, it’s important not to pack necessities like prescription medications, paperwork or clothing you may need, etc., inside equipment that is going into storage.
How much do portable storage units cost?
Pricing is unique to each move and is based on factors like location, how much space you need, move date and how long you need storage. Get a free online quote or call a U-Pack consultant at 800-413-4799 and we’ll be happy to discuss portable storage rates for your move!
How can I save money on mobile storage?
Use these tips:
- Move terminal-to-terminal. A terminal-to-terminal move is where you load/unload your belongings at the local service center. While it requires a little extra time and effort, you could save up to $300 in transportation costs. Ask your U-Pack specialist about this money-saving option.
- Move during off-peak season. Moving expenses are typically lower during the off-peak season (October-March). Save money by scheduling your move during these months.
- Purge unnecessary items. Packing items that won’t be used at your new house takes up extra space, which costs you more. Consider donating, selling or trashing belongings you don’t want or need.
- Pack high and tight. Many people don’t realize that the way you pack and load can also determine how much space you take up in the ReloCube or trailer (which can change the cost). Maximize your space by packing “high and tight.” Read these helpful loading tips for some best practices.
Do you have storage containers for sale?
Actually, we do! If you’d like to purchase a used trailer or ReloCube as a permanent portable storage solution, check out our ABF Freight® equipment page for more details.
