Compare U-Pack to SMARTBOX® moving and storage

When comparing portable storage services for a long-distance move, you may be wondering how U-Pack and SMARTBOX differ. While the overall process is similar — both deliver containers to you, you pack and load, and then the company transports or stores it for you — some differences may sway your decision. Let’s take a look at a quick comparison chart, and then dive into some more detailed information.

More information

Now, let’s take a closer look:

Container comparison

The U-Pack ReloCube is slightly larger than a SMARTBOX container. It measures 6’ D x 7’ W x 8’ H, and is made with sturdy, weatherproof metal. Each CubeTM can hold the contents of a studio apartment or one room’s worth of furnishings. It also has tie-down points you can use to secure your belongings.

A SMARTBOX container is 5’ W x 7’H x 8’L. It’s made of wood, topped with a canvas covering and can hold one room’s worth of belongings.

Need more space for a bigger move? Both U-Pack and SMARTBOX allow customers to use multiple containers at once. Or, if you’d rather pack everything together, U-Pack also offers a 28’ trailer. You can use as little as 5 linear feet or the entire space.

Moving and storage services

U-Pack gives customers three free business days on both ends of the move for loading and unloading, and our transit time averages 2-5 business days — perfect for quick moves! But, if you don’t want it quite so fast, you have the option to store at one of our secure service centers.

A SMARTBOX container includes a 30-day rental, covering time for loading, transit, some storage, and unloading. If you don’t need 30 days to complete the move, you still pay for that time — the price isn’t adjusted. On-site and long-term storage is available at a monthly rate after the first 30 days.

How costs work

Both U-Pack and SMARTBOX offer “pay for the number of containers you use” pricing. This means that regardless of how many containers you reserve, you only pay for the ones you use.

U-Pack doesn’t require a down payment or deposit. Instead, you pay after we pick up the shipment and it’s in transit. SMARTBOX requires you to pay an initial delivery charge when they bring you empty containers for loading. That charge differs depending on location and the number of units you need.

Getting a quote

U-Pack makes getting quotes easy! Just enter a few details about your move into our free online quote tool, and then a price will populate. Choose the equipment you want (toggle between the Cube and trailer to see the pricing), and then reserve online or call a U-Pack representative at 800-413-4799.

SMARTBOX lets you start the quote process online, but you’ll need to call to reserve the service.

With more than 230 service centers in our system, U-Pack provides service to locations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Canada. Our broad service area includes both metro areas and less-populated cities.
