Looking for fun summer craft ideas for your kids?

You may be wondering how to keep your kids entertained over the long stretch of summer. Summer crafts are a great way to let your kids be creative, explore, and have fun! While the sun is shining and the weather is nice, you can take advantage and do some fun crafts outdoors. But when the temps climb to unbearable heights, or you have to stay inside on a rainy day, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep your kids entertained for hours, too. Whether your kids are toddlers or tweens, they’ll love these fun summer craft ideas!

Outdoor Summer Craft Ideas

One of my favorite summertime activities is tie dying. Instead of traditional tie dying, give Sharpie® tie dying a try! Babble Dabble Do has a great easy tutorial to follow. Your kids will love expressing their creativity and making a masterpiece. You can do anything from T-shirts to pillowcases and even your bed sheets! This is a fun summer craft that the kids will want to show off to their friends. Because of the permanent nature of Sharpies, we recommend doing this craft outdoors. (You can tie dye indoors, but it can get pretty messy.) Trust us—save your dining room table!

Since Disney’s “Frozen” is such a hit with the kiddos, they’ll love working on a Frozen-inspired craft! The Frozen slime from Growing a Jeweled Rose is both fun and refreshing on a hot summer day. The ingredients are surprisingly simple with only liquid starch and glitter glue required to make this fun craft. Keep the mess to a minimum by doing this craft on the porch or in the driveway.

Crafting Frozen-inspired slime is sure to be a hit!

When the weather is nice, I love to go outside with my cousins and use sidewalk chalk. But another fun alternative is to make your own ice chalk. This  cool craft  will help you beat the heat! Reading Confetti takes liquid sidewalk chalk and freezes it for some icy fun. She also gives plenty of great ideas for using the ice chalk in color races and color mixing experiments.

Ice chalk is perfect for outdoor fun on a warm day.

Indoor Summer Craft Ideas

When it gets too hot to be outside, you can cool off indoors by making homemade ice cream in a bag. Part cooking lesson, part science experiment – this yummy idea will be a hit with your family! The recipe and method from I Can Teach My Child is simple to make.

Nothing says summertime like homemade ice cream!

If your kids have friends over on a play-inside day,  you could plan on making friendship bracelets. All you need is embroidery thread (affordable and easy to find in stores). This craft can be time-consuming, so it’s perfect when you need to fill a couple of hours with an activity! Friendship-Bracelets.net has tons of patterns to choose from, ranging in difficulty – so you can start with the easy ones and progress into more difficult patterns throughout the summer.

For kiddos who love dirt and bugs, why not let them eat dirt?! When it gets too hot during the summer to enjoy the great outdoors, bring it inside for a snack! This dirt dessert is a more interactive experience than eating “dirt cake” – instead your kid can smash the candy rocks and mix their container of “dirt” just the way they want. No Time for Flash Cards has a great step-by-step tutorial for this.

Bring the outdoors inside with these fun dirt desserts!
