Choosing Moving and Storage Companies

Finding a moving storage service

Need moving and storage? You’re not alone! It's actually pretty common to store your belongings for a while when you’re relocating. Whether you're waiting a few days for a house closing or waiting months to find the right place to live, it can be difficult to coordinate everything so your belongings arrive exactly when you need them. Comparing moving and storage companies will help you get a better idea of which one would be best for your particular situation.

Storage and moving options

Most movers offer both moving and storage — and for those that don’t, there are still ways to coordinate a move with storage. Choosing the right option really comes down to your needs, your budget and how much work you want to do.

Rental trucks for moving and storage

This type of move requires the most work upfront (and adding storage will usually require a little more effort). Along with packing, loading and driving, storing your items with a rental truck move will typically mean unloading your items from the truck and moving them into a separate storage building. When you're ready for your items at your new place, you’ll have to load again and drive to your new home to unload there. That’s a lot of loading and unloading! While you might be able to find a good rate for your move, it may not always be the easiest solution due to the extra work and added fees for the storage unit.

Moving and storage containers

Container moving is a popular option when you need a little extra time between moving out of your old home and into the new one. Storage containers sit at ground level for easy loading and unloading and (with most options) you don’t have to drive. Several companies offer this type of moving and storage solution. Let’s compare the highlights.

  • U-Haul U-Box® – These moving and storage containers are plywood boxes with vinyl covers. You can choose from self-delivery (where you drive the U-Box on a trailer), truck delivery (where they deliver it to you) or you can load/unload at U-Haul. The first 30 days of use is included in your price, but additional storage is extra.
  • PODS® – PODS® containers are made of metal and are delivered to your door. The first 30 days of use is included in your price and additional storage is at an extra cost.
  • Pack-Rat® – Pack-Rat offers metal moving and storage containers that are delivered to your home. The first 30 days of use is included and extra storage is available.
  • U-Pack®– U-Pack has two different containers, a moving trailer and a metal ReloCube®. Door-to-door delivery is standard, but loading/unloading at a service center for a cheaper rate is another option to consider. Monthly storage rates are available.

Keep in mind that for the moving storage services that include 30 days of use, that timeframe includes the time it takes you to load/unload plus transit time. For example, if it takes 4 days to load, 5 days for transit and 4 days to unload, that leaves only 17 days available for storing . While the time it takes to complete each step of the move varies by each company (and your own moving schedule), it’s important to ask for a breakdown of what’s included in the 30 days so you know what to expect.

U-Pack rates include 3 business days to load and 3 more days to unload, plus an estimated transit time for delivery. If you need your items stored for a longer time frame, storage is available in full 30-day increments.

Compare coverage areas

One common problem people have when looking for a moving and storage company is finding one that services both their origin and destination. A limited service area can make it difficult to move!

That's why many customers like U-Pack. With service centers in all 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico, U-Pack can service many smaller towns and accommodate most moves.

To confirm U-Pack coverage in your area, click for a free moving quote. Just enter the city and state (or zip code) of where you’re moving to and from to verify serviceability. If you need storage, rates will be listed along with your quote. Whether you’re moving from Dallas to Atlanta, Orlando to Lexington, Anchorage to Oceanside or Las Vegas to Glendale, U-Pack can handle your moving and storage needs.

Save time and money on moving storage

When comparing storage and moving quotes, remember to consider all possible costs plus the time it will take to complete the move with each company. As we mentioned before, get a breakdown of the entire process so you know how much storage time is included with your cost and what arrangements you’ll need to make in case more time is required. When you factor in things like loading and unloading time plus the safety, security and location for storing your items, you might find that it’s more convenient to go with a service like U-Pack.
