How to calculate fuel costs for Budget Moving Truck rentals

If you’re using a Budget truck, part of planning moving expenses should include figuring rental truck fuel costs.

To estimate the fuel price for a move, start by dividing the number of miles to travel by the truck’s MPG. Next, multiply that number by the average gas or diesel price to get your cost estimate, like this:

(Miles ÷ MPG) x Fuel Price = Estimated Fuel Cost

Example gas costs for a 16-foot Budget truck

Let’s look at example fuel costs for a 1,670-mile move from Denver, CO, to Raleigh, NC, in a 16-foot Budget truck. The estimated MPG for this truck size is 6-10 miles per gallon, so we used 8 MPG for our calculation. Gas was $3.14 per gallon based on AAA’s average gas prices at the time of posting.

1,670 miles ÷ 8 MPG = 208.75
208.75 x $3.14 = $655.48 estimated fuel costs

Example diesel costs for a 26-foot Budget truck

What will diesel cost you in a 26-foot Budget truck for the same move from Denver to Raleigh? We figured prices based on 9 MPG (the truck is estimated to get between 8 and 10 MPG). According to AAA, diesel prices averaged $3.52 per gallon at the time of posting.

1,670 miles ÷ 9 MPG = 185.56
185.56 x $3.52 = $653.16 estimated fuel costs
