August 1st, 2012 - 4:09 PM

We’ve caught it and there is no cure. We will go through terrible withdrawals when it is over. “It” is Olympic fever! Here at U-Pack our water cooler talk is all about the Olympics. We know quite a bit about different places in the US, mostly because we have moved some of our 500,000 customers just about everywhere at some point…so we naturally wanted to know where these talented athletes train. Let’s take a look.

  • Famous coaches Marta and Bela Karolyi host the team at the National Team Training Center at Karolyi Ranch in Huntsville, TX, just 60 miles from Houston.

  • There is an aquatic center at the US Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs, CO. The pool contains 909,000 gallons of water!

  • There is a sports center in the Colorado Springs complex that can accommodate training for 14 Olympic sports including basketball, volleyball, team handball, and archery.

  • The Olympic Shooting Center is the largest indoor shooting facility in the Western Hemisphere and the 4th largest in the whole world!

  • In Lake Placid, NY, winter Olympians can practice on facilities used for the 1980 Olympics! There are training centers here for speed skating, skiing, bobsled, judo, wrestling, and synchronized swimming!

  • Chula Vista, CA is the home of the first US Olympic Committee training center that was master planned from the ground up. It’s year-round warm weather is conducive to training for many sports including archery, BMX, beach volleyball, triathalon, softball, tennis, rugby, rowing, soccer and also cross-training for winter sports. Rowers practice at the Princeton National Rowing Association in Princeton Junction, NJ or the Oklahoma City Boathouse.

  • US Olympic sailors train at the Miami Sailing Center. They have a 1.7 acre waterfront site with two 3-ton hoists for the boats!

  • Whitewater rafters can sharpen their skills at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC in the world’s largest re-circulating artificial whitewater course.

  • The Pettit National Ice Center is an official US Olympic training site for ice skating and racing. They have an oval, two international-sized rinks, and an indoor track.

  • Another ice skating site is World Arena in Colorado Springs with a studio, and two ice sheets: one Olympic-sized and one NHL-sized.

  • Many outdoor athletes train at Anschutz Southern California in Carson, CA. They have soccer fields, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and track and field facilities.

  • For wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, and track and field, athletes head to Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.

  • For many winter Olympic sports (alpine skiing, bobsled, snow boarding, speed skating, etc.) there are facilities in Park City, UT at the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.

  • Shooting sports train at the Hill Country Shooting facility in Kerrville, TX. They train singles and doubles trap, sporting clays, skeet shooting, and more.  This is the competition venue for the US Olympic Shotgun Team.
