Can an 18 year old drive a rental truck?

September 17th, 2014 - 3:30 PM

How old do you have to be to rent a truck?

In most states, licensed drivers can drive a car at 16. But, when it comes to renting a truck, the age companies normally require is 18.

Renting a Moving Truck at 18

Technically, 18 year olds are able to rent a truck from U-Haul®, Budget®, and Penske®. However, there are some things to consider.

Extra fees. In order to rent a truck at 18, companies may require you to pay an underage surcharge. For example, Budget charges an additional $25 per day if you’re under 23. Depending on how long you plan to rent the truck, those extra fees can really add up. Also, if you need to add a second driver who’s also under 23, you’ll pay an additional driver fee and the underage surcharge. Consider this: with a rental truck, you’re already paying for extras like liability coverage and fuel. Once you stack on the underage surcharges, the overall cost can get expensive fast.

Extra Identification. In order to rent a truck at 18, you may be required to present additional forms of identification. Both Budget and Penske require two types of ID for 18 year olds, so make sure you have those secured before attempting to pick up your rental truck.

Credit Card. Many companies require you to have a credit card on file during your move. That may be a problem for 18 year olds who don’t yet have one. You may be able to use someone else’s card, like your parent’s, but they’ll have to be present when you rent the truck in order to use their card.

Driving risks. Driving a rental truck has its own difficulties. Because of the size of the truck, you have to be extra careful when driving, turning, backing up, and stopping. Many 18 year olds are relatively new to driving, so a bulky rental truck may pose an unfamiliar challenge. According to the CDC, the risk of motor vehicles crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than any other age group. For this reason, you’ll want to take extra care when driving your belongings across the country.
