Moving Across Missouri from St. Louis to Kansas City

Just 250 miles apart on Interstate 70 lie Missouri’s two biggest cities — St. Louis and Kansas City (KC). With world-class museums, famous foods and jazzy music, the towns have a lot in common. But while they share a few qualities and the same state, there are some notable differences. Check them out below, and then, learn how U-Pack® can simplify your move from St. Louis to Kansas City.

5 Ways Kansas City is Different from St. Louis

More People

You can expect bigger crowds in Kansas City. St. Louis’s population is about 309,000 and KC’s is 489,000. However, if you go by metro area populations, St. Louis has more people. Its metro population is 2.8 million while Kansas City’s is 2.2 million. The numbers are pretty close either way.

Higher Incomes

If you’re moving for work, you’ll be happy to know Kansas City has a higher median income. Sperling’s Best Places reports that St. Louis has a family median income of $49,555 and Kanas City’s is $64,817. The unemployment rate is lower which speaks for the city’s increasing job growth.

Tastier BBQ

You’ll find some of the country’s best BBQ in both cities, but it’s a way of life in Kansas City. More than 100 restaurants serve pork, lamb ribs, brisket, chicken and ham smothered in some of the finest BBQ sauce. Fun fact: KC hosts the “World Series of Barbecue” each year. This event is the world’s largest BBQ competition, with over 50,000 in attendance. Another notable BBQ mention is K.C. Masterpiece which originated in Kansas City in 1977.

Famous Fountains

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is Missouri’s most famous icon. But Kansas City isn’t known as the “City of Fountains” for nothing! There are over 200 fountains officially registered in the Greater Kansas City area. Many of them date back to the early 1800s and are true historical pieces. The beautiful architect and features of each make the city a unique place to live and visit. Be sure to check out the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain — It’s KC’s prized possession.

The Sports

Are you a die-hard Cardinals’ fan? The good news is you’re still close enough to Busch Stadium to attend some games! Or, you can always watch them when they’re in town to play the Royals. If you don’t care about Baseball, there are two other local professional teams. Cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) and the Sporting Kansas City (MLS) instead.
