Moving from San Jose, CA, to Dallas, TX

Experience big-city life in D-Town

You might have heard the phrase, “Everything is Bigger in Texas,” and it’s true for the city of Dallas, which is a bit larger than San Jose, CA. Dallas is the third-most populous city in Texas, with over 1.3 million residents living within city limits and 7.5 million in the metro area.

While Dallas has more people compared to San Jose’s population of 1.01 million (2 million in the metro), you might feel a bit less crowded in your new home since the population density in “D-Town” is about half that in San Jose or the “Capital of Silicon Valley.”

Expect more rain and hotter summers in Texas

Summers in Dallas are warmer than in San Jose, with temperatures usually exceeding the mid-90s. But the hot temperatures don’t come with a dry climate — Dallas gets around 39 inches of rain per, over twice as much as San Jose’s average of 17 inches.

Although winters in Dallas are a bit colder than what you had in California, the city averages only 1 inch of snow per year. If you like sunshine, your new home in Texas gets around 234 sunny days each year, which is only a bit less than San Jose’s 257 days.

Living and working in Dallas

The cost of living in Dallas is lower than in San Jose, and the job market is strong, with unemployment rates below the national average. The area’s largest employers include American Airlines, AT&T, Bank of America, Lockheed Martin and Texas Health Resources.
