Making the big move to San Jose!

When you move to San Jose, the first thing you’ll likely notice is the Bay Area’s Mediterranean climate. Since the city is farther inland than San Francisco, there is considerably less rain and fog. As the third largest city in California – over 1.8 million in the metro area – you’ll find San Jose to be everything you’re looking for in a Californian town. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about San Jose. Ready? Set? Read on!

Moving to San Jose means moving to the heart of Silicon Valley.

Moving to San Jose – What you need (and want) to know

It’s the Capital of Silicon Valley. San Jose is the largest city within Silicon Valley, dubbing it the unofficial capital of the area. Tech giants like Adobe, Cisco Systems, and eBay are all headquartered here. Other large companies such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Samsung, Netgear, Ultratech, and VeriFone also call the city home. Did you know that San Jose residents produce more U.S. patents than any other city?

Education is important. The city is home to several universities and San Jose State is the largest. Other universities in the area include National Hispanic University, CALMAT, and Lincoln Law School. Your school-age children will fit right in the San Jose Unified School District. There are 40 schools in the district – 27 elementary schools, six middle schools, and seven high schools.

The cost of living is high. Better save up before moving to San Jose because it’s definitely not cheap to live there. According to Silicon Valley Business Journal, it’s 87% more expensive to live in the heart of Silicon Valley than anywhere else in the United States. The Business Journal also points out that that in 2013, the average monthly rent for a one bedroom, one bath apartment was $1,825.

The weather is fine! As mentioned above, San Jose has a Mediterranean climate. Because it doesn’t face the Pacific Ocean, it doesn’t get as much rain. What it does get, however, is sunshine. Lots and lots of it. In fact, the city receives more than 300 days of sunshine per year!

It’s surrounded by beauty. Two bodies of water run through the city – the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek. The city is bordered by two mountains as well – the Santa Cruz Mountains on the west and the Diablo Mountain range on the east. Get out and explore the outdoors around you after moving to San Jose.

Parks and rec abound. San Jose is packed full of recreational sites. There are 4,147 acres of park space in the Almaden Quicksilver county Park, and 718 acres in the Alum Rock Park. Kelley Park offers Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (a children’s amusement park), the Japanese Friendship Garden (a history park), and the Portuguese Historical Museum. The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is a must-see with more than 4,000 rose bushes!

Arts and culture thrive. San Jose is home to many performing arts companies. From the opera, ballet, and children’s musical theater to youth symphony and many other stage performances, you can participate in and watch performances of all sorts. If you prefer art, there is the San Jose Museum of Art that is full of modern art. Enjoy movies? The Cinnequest Film Festival draws over 600,000 people each year.

There are many events. If you’re looking for entertainment, look no further than the HP Pavilion. With more than 184 events per year, there’s something for everyone. Enjoy sports? Take in a game at the HP Pavilion and see the NHL’s San Jose Sharks hit the puck around. Looking for outdoor entertainment? Check out Raging Waters, one of the largest water parks in Northern California.
