Moving from New York, NY, to Minneapolis, MN

Exciting (smaller) city life in Minneapolis

Ready for life in an exciting place much smaller than New York City? Moving 1,200 miles away to Minneapolis is a good start!

The diverse city has around 430,000 residents and 3.7 million in the metro.

While Minneapolis is much smaller than NYC, which has a metro population of over 20 million residents, the “City of Lakes” has plenty of exciting things to do and places to explore.

Keep your winter gear

Don’t throw away your New York winter gear. You’ll need it even more in Minneapolis, which gets twice as much snow as NYC. Minneapolis averages 52 inches of snow per year, with winter lows averaging 7 degrees, compared to 25 inches of snow and lows of 26 degrees back in New York.

Though the city makes up for the difference in precipitation with snow, the annual rainfall in Minneapolis is only 32 inches compared to 47 in NYC.

Both cities experience warm summers, with average high temperatures in the mid-80s.

Things to do and see

You won’t find as many attractions in Minneapolis as in New York City, but the city has tons to do and see.

Here are places and experiences you won’t want to miss:

  • First Avenue & 7th St Entry (live music venue that launched the career of the late artist Prince)

  • Mall of America (in nearby Bloomington)

  • Mill City Museum

  • Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA)

  • Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, home of the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture

  • Minnehaha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall in the city’s park system.

  • The Guthrie Theater

Finding work in a new city

The cost of living is significantly lower in Minneapolis than in New York, and despite being a smaller city, there are multiple job opportunities.

Science is a key industry in Minneapolis, with positions in biotechnology, health technology and life science. The area also has strong manufacturing and retail industries.

Top employers include 3M, Best Buy Corporate, Boston Scientific, Cargill, General Mills, Target Corporate and Xcel Energy.
