Moving from Elizabeth, NJ, to Milwaukee, WI
Going bigger in the Midwest
Elizabeth is the fourth-largest city in New Jersey, with a population of around 137,000 people. It doesn’t sound huge compared to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which has just over half a million people, but you might feel a bit less crowded 890 miles away in your new Midwestern city.
Despite having more people, the population density in Milwaukee is about half what you’re used to in Elizabeth, so you’ll have more room to breathe while adjusting to a new lifestyle in “Brew City.”
Expect more snow and mild summers
While you’re accustomed to snow from living in Elizabeth, you’ll want to prepare for more in Milwaukee. The city averages 45 inches of snowfall annually, with lows averaging 14 degrees, compared to only 26 inches in Elizabeth, with average lows of 26.
You can, however, anticipate less rainfall, with Milwaukee averaging 35 inches per year, which is 13 less than Elizabeth.
Summers in Wisconsin are mild, like Elizabeth, with temperatures typically staying in the low-to-mid 80s.
Things to do in Milwaukee
One advantage of moving to a larger city is finding many things to do. Four of the world’s largest breweries are located in the town, Blatz, Pabst, Schlitz and Miller, contributing to one of the city’s nicknames of “Brew City.”
Another of Milwaukee’s nicknames is “Cream City” because many of the city’s historical buildings are constructed of signature cream-colored bricks made from clay found in the area.
Be sure to check out the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee County Zoo, the Harley-Davidson Museum and Lakefront Brewery as you explore the new surroundings.
Enjoy a lower cost of living
Despite being a larger city, Milwaukee is known for having a lower cost of living than Elizabeth. From daily commute costs to housing prices, Milwaukee offers a better value than similarly sized metro areas, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Milwaukee's unemployment rates are below the national average, with precision manufacturing and health care being the top industries. The city is also home to headquarter campuses for Harley-Davidson and Rockwell Automation.
