Moving from Denver, CO, to Scottsdale, AZ

Warmer desert weather and more in Scottsdale

Moving 850 miles from the “Mile-High City” of Denver, Colorado, to Scottsdale, Arizona, means adjusting to desert weather in the city of just under 250,000 people.

Snowfall is extremely rare in Scottsdale, with winter lows averaging 42 degrees, so you won’t need any heavy winter gear from Colorado.

Scottsdale summers are dry and warm, with average temps over 100 degrees in July — compared to highs of around 89 degrees in Denver.

Rainfall is also less in Scottsdale, averaging 11 inches per year, roughly half the amount you’re used to in Denver. Keep reading to learn more about “The West’s Most Western Town.”

Love the Western culture

From contemporary art to the Old Town district, Scottsdale has an affluent culture with many Western-themed activities. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has been held there since 1955.

Check out the Main Street Arts District, the Marshall Way Arts District, and Old Town during the Scottsdale Artwalk held every Thursday evening.

You’ll also find high fashion shows, the Barrett-Jackson Auto Show and the Scottsdale Culinary Festival in the city. And don’t miss a photo op at one of Robert Indiana’s “Love” sculptures at the Civic Center.

Scottsdale job market

Like Arizona’s capital city of Phoenix — about 13 miles away — tourism is among the largest job markets in the city due to the number of travelers starting their desert vacations in the area.

Scottsdale has multiple luxury hotels and destination spas visited by people from all over the world.

Healthcare is popular employment in the city since Scottsdale is home to a major Mayo Clinic campus. Other top employers headquartered  in the city include:

  • APL
  • Cold Stone Creamery
  • Discount Tire
  • Fender
  • Go Daddy
  • Magellan Health
  • P.F. Chang’s China Bistro
  • United Blood Services

Perfect your golf swing

Like Denver, being outside is popular in Scottsdale. The city is a top golf destination, with over 200 area courses. Given Scottsdale’s proximity to the state capital, it’s also home to the annual Phoenix Open Golf Tournament.

Is Golf not your sport? That’s okay. Parks for biking, hiking and rock climbing surround the city.

If you’re a baseball fan, the San Francisco Giants (MLB) use Scottsdale Stadium for their spring training, and the facility also hosts the Scottsdale Scorpions, a minor league baseball team.

For major league sports, look no further than Phoenix for the Phoenix Suns (NBA), the Arizona Cardinals (NFL), the Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB) and the Arizona Coyotes (NHL).
