Leaving the Queen City for Steel City

Moving 450 miles from Charlotte, NC, to Pittsburgh, PA, will take you from the Southeast Region into the Northeast Region of the United States.

Pittsburgh was founded in 1758, about 10 years before “The Queen City,” Charlotte, was incorporated. Initially the location of Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War, the area began to grow significantly following the American Revolution.

Later known for steel production during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the “Steel City” of Pittsburgh weathered the recession of the early 2000s well and is now the second-most populous city in Pennsylvania.

A less populated metro area

While Pittsburgh’s city population of around 303,000 residents is less than half the population of Charlotte, you might feel like you’re in a more crowded city because of the population density. Pittsburgh has about 5,471 people living within each square mile, while Charlotte has only around 2,821 in the same area.

Pittsburgh’s metro population of around 2.5 million is a bit smaller than Charlotte’s metro population of 2.8 million, but you’ll still find ample opportunities to make your mark in a new city.
