Moving from Charlotte, NC, to Cincinnati, OH

A tale of two Queen cities

Despite being located in different states nearly 500 miles apart, Charlotte, NC, and Cincinnati, OH, share a nickname of “the Queen City.” Named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Great Britain and Ireland, Charlotte was officially incorporated in 1768 and is now home to almost 875,000 residents, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

Although Cincinnati is a little younger (town incorporated in 1802, city in 1820) and less populous, with just under 310,000 people calling the city home, it has plenty to offer newcomers in its large metropolitan area of 2.3 million residents. Cincinnati also has a few more nicknames, including “Cincy,” “The Queen of the West,” The Blue Chip City” and “The City of Seven Hills.”

Prepare for colder winters

You can expect colder winters in Cincinnati than what you’re used to in Charlotte. Yearly temperatures are typically between 24 and 86 degrees, with snowfall averaging about 23 inches during the winter. That’s much more snow than Charlotte’s annual average of less than 4 inches. Cincinnati summers are generally warm, with temperatures rarely exceeding 93 degrees. Rainfall is similar in both cities, with yearly averages of around 43 inches.

Working in Cincinnati

Cincinnati has a strong job market with unemployment rates lower than the national average. The city also boasts a lower cost of living than other similarly sized metro areas.
