Planning a move to Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh is the 2nd largest city in Pennsylvania. Pittsburg is also consistently ranked high in livability surveys. But what about the details? Here are some important things to know before moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Moving to Pittsburgh means you have endless opportunities to explore.

Weather in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has warm summers and cold winters. Summer highs average in the mid-80s, and winter temps dip into the 20s. Spring and fall are perfect in Pittsburgh, with temperatures in the 60s. Precipitation is pretty spread out throughout the year, with 2-3 inches of rain falling each month. You can expect snow here, with an average of 40 snowy days each year.

Pittsburgh Economy

With the closing of many steel plants, the region has shifted to technology, healthcare, tourism, and education as its major industries. Former factories have now become office spaces; Google has an office in an old Nabisco factory. The city’s largest employer is the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with 48,000 employees.

Things to Do in The Steel City

Whether you're into spectator sports, family fun, nature or art and history, you'll find more fun than you can handle in Pittsburgh.

Since Pittsburgh weather provides four full seasons, there are many activities to enjoy year-round. For starters, the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers are what Pittsburg is about in the fall and winter. In the summers, sports enthusiasts watch the MLB’s Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

For some cultural fun, check out the calendar at Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts or the Benedum Center. You’ll find performances by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Opera, River City Brass Band, and more. And don’t miss the museum scene! Pittsburgh is home to amazing museums such as the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Frick Art & Historical Center.

For family fun, check out the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium or the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

The Local “Language”

Locals do speak English, but their dialect is called “Pittsburghese.” With influences from Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and Central Europe, you’ll hear some interesting phrases. Those with this dialect are called “yinzers” because of the word “yinz” which means “you all” or a blended form of “you ones.” You may hear “slippy” instead of slippery, and “redd up” rather than clean up. Many with this dialect also drop the verb “to be” so they would say “The car needs washed” instead of “The car needs to be washed.”
