Do you need to take a break from the packing and have a little fun? Here are some ideas for ways to take a break around the area:

Watch the trains at Horseshoe Curve

This historic site includes the three-railroad curve of the Pittsburgh Line and a visitor center to watch the trains. It is an engineering marvel, built in the 1850s without any heavy equipment. Horses, wagons, picks, shovels and hundreds of employees carved out the face of the Allegheny Mountains to place this line, which is the main route from Chicago and the east coast. Because of its importance, during WWII, this area was targeted by Germany, but thankfully, the plans were foiled.  You can learn all about it and watch the trains make the curve at the visitor center.

Visit Lakemont Park

Built in 1894, this is the 8th-oldest amusement park in the country! It’s a unique mix of green space and theme park. It houses the world’s oldest-surviving roller coast, the Leap-the-Dips. Along with the rides, you can play on paddle boats and go-karts, challenge friends to a game of basketball, volleyball or cornhole, or take a dip in the pool!

Cheer for the home team

The Altoona Curve, a minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, play at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Along with the fun of the game, the field is unique — modeled after a railroad roundhouse. You can see the Skyliner from Lakemont Park and the Allegheny Mountains from the stands. It just makes for a beautiful evening!
