Located just 45 minutes away from New York City, Paterson is the third-most populous city in New Jersey and a great place to settle down and raise a family. With a population just shy of 150,000, you’ll find that the town is just big enough to offer plenty of amenities for day to day living. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of moving to Paterson, NJ.

Moving to Paterson is a great idea for setting down roots.

Moving to Paterson

Rich history. In the late 1700s, Alexander Hamilton founded the Society for the Establishment of Useful Manufactures (SUM) in order to develop and fund an industrial city in the United States. He believed in taking advantage of the energy of the Great Falls of the Passaic River and gaining independence from Britain. Paterson was founded by the society and became America’s first industrial city. The city was named after William Paterson, the governor of New Jersey.

Industrial roots. The industries that developed in Paterson included mill buildings, manufacturing of textiles, firearms, silk, and railroad parts. The city is known as “Silk City” because the production of silk became the most dominant industry in the late 1800s. Today, Paterson still grows its industrial roots by producing garments, textiles, electronic components, ribbons, plastics, cosmetics, packaging, and rubber goods. Local government, health care, and the local university are the three top employers in the area.

Parks. Paterson is full of wonderful parks to enjoy. The centerpiece of the local parks system is Great Falls. The waterfall is 77 feet tall and falls directly into the Passaic River. The area is protected as the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park and is operated by the National Park Service. Other parks in the area to explore include Eastside Park, Westside Park, and Overlook Park.

Neighborhoods. After you move to Paterson, you might want to rent first, then buy. Why? Because there are so many neighborhoods to choose from! The Great Falls Historic District is the most famous because of the waterfall. Downtown Paterson is also a popular spot to call home. Other neighborhoods include Eastside Park Historic District, Manor Section, South Paterson, Lakeview, Hillcrest, People’s Park, Wrigley Park, and Sandy Hill.

Ethnic Diversity. Paterson is a melting pot of cultures. You can find people from all over the world in the town – Irish, Dutch, German, Italian, European, Syrian, Lebanese, etc. There are all sorts of parades in town to celebrate these cultures.

Education. If you’re moving to Paterson with children, they will likely attend school in the Paterson Public School Systems. The district serves 29,400 students in preschool to grade 12 across 54 schools. One highlight of the school district is their “theme” high schools. There are high schools offering students the ability to pursue different paths, such as healthcare, the arts, information technology, culinary arts, hospitality and tourism, business, and architecture and construction. For those seeking higher education, Paterson offers William Paterson University. The university serves nearly 11,500 students with an average class size of 19 students.

Sports. If you like watching sports, you can show your “Pioneer spirit” by supporting the 13 intercollegiate sports teams at William Paterson University. Sports include cheerleading, equestrian, track, ice hockey, bowling, and rugby.

Keeping history alive. Paterson has many historical buildings in town. You can view historic homes in the Eastside Park District. Or, visit the Paterson Museum to learn all about the city’s past. If you want to view the grand architecture of a silk tycoon’s home, visit the Lambert Castle.
