Are you moving to Saginaw, Michigan?

Saginaw, Michigan is a city that manages to stay under the national radar. When people outside of the state hear the name, they would probably assume it’s a tiny town with only a handful of residents – but that’s not the case. Saginaw is one of the best small-city gems in the country. With its population of 50,000, Saginaw has enough people to keep things interesting, but is modest enough in size to retain small town American values.

The Saginaw River runs through the city of Saginaw, and the city is unique in that it is largely water-filled. In fact, of the 18.1 square miles the town covers, 17.34 square miles of that is water. Not only does a river run through it, but Lake Huron also borders the city. Temperatures can be very cold during the winter time, with snow and ice typical during this period. The Fashion Square Mall, meanwhile, houses Sears, Macy’s, JCPenney and more.

The Temple Theatre also offers live entertainment and the Children’s Zoo is another area of interest. Where have I heard of Saginaw before?

Saginaw has actually been referenced many times in popular culture. Shows like Seinfeld, Supernatural and Even Stevens have all referenced the town in various episodes. It is also used several times in popular music. The song “America” by folk rock legends Simon & Garfunkle has the line “It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw, I’ve gone to look for America.” Most prominently, Don Wayne and Bill Anderson wrote “Saginaw, Michigan” in honor of the city. The song has been recorded by many popular artists, including Johnny Cash. While the song is a fitting tribute, it has to be said that the lyrics place the city on Saginaw Bay, which is 15 miles north of the town in reality. But it’s the thought that counts.
