What you should know before moving to Fresno

Great location. Fresno is just 3 hours away from Sacramento and Los Angeles respectively, 2.5 hours away from San Jose, and just one hour away from Yosemite National Park.

Nice weather. With a semi-arid climate, you can expect mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. July is the hottest month, while December and January are the coldest. Temps in the summer average in the 90s, while temps in the winter average in the 50s. As for rain, Fresno gets about 11.5 inches per year. One thing you’ll enjoy about Fresno weather is the abundant sunshine, especially in the summer months. In fact, July gets about 96% of sunshine, so be sure to get outside and enjoy it.

Outdoor adventure. Speaking of enjoying the outdoors, Fresno has plenty to offer its residents for outdoor fun. There’s really no reason to stay inside when living in Fresno. You can golf, hike, snowboard, ski, white water raft, boat, rock climb, and much more. The city encourages residents to get out and enjoy their surroundings.

For family outdoor fun within the city, spend time at one of Fresno’s three large public parks. Woodward Park features Shinzen Japanese Gardens and lots of picnic areas. Roeding Park is near downtown and houses the Fresno Chafee Zoo and Rotary Storyland and Playland. Lastly, Kearney Park has two softball fields, two soccer fields, two horseshoe pits, and two dance slabs.

Raisins matter. Fresno is known as the Raisin Capital of the World. In fact, the city and surrounding areas produce about 60% of the world’s raisins and about 90% of the raisins sold within the nation. After moving to Fresno, you’ll need to get on board with the raisin craze!

Good neighborhoods. There are plenty of places to call home within the city. Central Fresno (downtown), Hoover, Fresno High Roeding, Mclane, and Woodward Park are all great neighborhoods to check out once you move to Fresno.

Walkability. According to Walk Score®, Fresno is the 25th most walkable city in the U.S., giving it a Walk Score of 42.

Economy. You might have a hard time finding a job in Fresno because the unemployment rate continues to grow year after year. In fact, the unemployment rate is much higher than the state’s rate. The jobs that drive the city’s economy include government, manufacturing, education, agriculture, and medical.

Education. Speaking of education, Fresno is home to 11 institutes of higher learning, including California State University at Fresno, Fresno Pacific University, Fresno City College, and California Christian College. For school-age children, they’ll fit right into the Fresno Unified School District. The district is the 4th largest in California and serves more than 73,000 students. There are 65 elementary schools, 17 middle schools, eight high schools, six alternative schools, and three special education schools.

Events. Fresno offers its residents several annual events. You can get in on all the fun at ArtHop, the Big Fresno Fair, Fresno Film Festival, Fresno Greek Fest, and the Miss California pageant.

The arts. Fresno is the place to be for the arts. You can enjoy performing arts and music, productions in historic theaters, and interesting museums. Don’t miss out on the Fresno Grand Opera, Azteca Theater, or the Fresno Art Museum.
