The Inside Scoop on Moving Trailers

July 23rd, 2018 - 1:03 PM

What exactly is a moving trailer?

Even when customers hear about the flexibility, security and ease of a moving trailer, they aren’t always sure what to expect. Most people are used to seeing big semi-trucks and regular rental trucks on the road, but how does the U-Pack trailer compare? Here’s the answer: our 28-foot moving trailer is smaller than a standard semi and just a little longer than the biggest U-Haul® (and the space is flexible). Take a closer look at how trailers work and see how they can make moving simple and affordable.

Details about moving in a trailer

Find out answers to the most common questions people have about U-Pack trailers, including size, parking, loading and more.

U-Pack trailer dimensions

The exterior is 28’ x 8’ x 9’ (LWH) and the interior is 324” x 96” x 108” — which gives it a loading capacity of 1,944 cubic feet. It stands about 4 feet off the ground and comes with a loading ramp that is 14-feet long when fully extended.

The trailer is equal in space to a 26’ rental truck plus a 10’ truck. But you don’t have to use the entire thing. We divide the trailer into linear feet, which are one-foot-long slices of the equipment (each linear foot is 1’ x 8’ x 9’). You can use as little as five linear feet or all the available space. The rate is based on what you use. If you need more or less than you reserved, no problem! Just use the linear feet you need, and we’ll adjust the rate accordingly. Trailer delivery and parking

U-Pack trailers are delivered to your home with a single cab tractor. Our primary transportation partner for transporting trailers is ABF Freight®

Trailers require about 40 feet of length for parking (2-3 car lengths) and 14 feet of overhead clearance. You’re responsible for securing legal, safe parking, which may involve obtaining a parking permit. We recommend checking with the city, police department, HOA, apartment manager, etc., to see if a parking permit is required.

If parking at your home will be an issue, give us a call at 800-413-4799. We specialize in coming up with creative solutions, and can help determine which option might be best.

In most cases, you have three business days to load and unload the moving trailer. For a little extra time, have it delivered on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to get the weekend included.

In locations with overnight parking restrictions, we have solutions. In some locations, we can provide same day drop-off and pickup or a live load (where the driver stays with the equipment and you load over a short window of time). In places where that’s not an option, you can load at the service center and avoid on-site parking altogether.

How to

To maximize space, it’s important to follow our loading tips such as stacking items high and tight and tying everything down to keep things secure during transit.

Unused space

After loading your belongings, you’ll place a secure divider wall (called a bulkhead) to separate the shipment from the rest of the trailer. Any unused space in the moving trailer gets filled with commercial goods heading in the same direction, which helps offset transportation costs. Your belongings are not co-mingled, unloaded or transferred — they stay behind the bulkhead wall until you remove it at destination.

Trailers don’t go directly from origin to destination. Instead, they travel through a network of service centers that handle U-Pack moves and commercial freight. It’s amazing how efficiently we can move your shipment this way! Most arrive in just 2-5 business days.

Moving trailer rates are based on a variety of factors including where you’re moving to/from, how much you’re moving and when you’re moving. Give us those details on our quote form, and we’ll give you a price. In rare cases, a moving consultant may have to look at the specifics and will email you a quote within one business day. If you happen to get a quote for ReloCube containers but would rather get one for a trailer, email us at changequote@upack.com and we will check your options.

Reserving a moving trailer

After getting a quote, you can reserve online or by phone at 800-413-4799. Reserving early guarantees your move date, so we recommend booking as early as possible.
