What to Expect from Full-Service Moving

When you don’t want a do-it-yourself move, full-service moving companies seem like a great option. Most include loading, transportation and unloading (and many also include packing). A crew does all the work, so you can step back during the process. While this type of move is convenient, it often comes with a much higher price tag than other types of moving companies. If you’re looking to move without doing all the work, take a closer look at the different full-service options, and then compare them to an alternative way to move — U-Pack®.

Check out this chart for a quick view of how U-Pack compares to full-service companies, and then keep reading for more info:

Comparing Well-Known Full-Service Companies

When searching for movers, you’ll find both small local moving companies and larger national companies. Before selecting one, it’s important to ask questions so you can compare the details of their service — things like how long it takes, what’s included in the price, and how the service works.  Here’s some information about what you can expect from these three well-known full-service movers:

What do Full-Service Movers Provide?

Each company provides different services. While loading, transportation and unloading are pretty standard, some other things may or may not be included:

  • Packing materials. Some companies will supply boxes and protective wraps, like furniture blankets or packing paper.
  • Packing and unpacking services. Getting everything in and out of boxes may be included or may be an extra cost.
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly. Movers may do tasks like taking apart bed frames or removing mirrors from dressers and legs from tables.
  • Disposal of packing materials. A full-service company may remove packing materials after unpacking, so you aren’t left with a mess.

Just remember that each of these services, while they may be helpful, adds to the cost.

How Items are Transported

Most full-service movers consolidate loads — that means if your belongings don’t fill up an entire moving truck, other household goods shipments are loaded onto the moving truck with yours.  It also means that your belongings may be unloaded and reloaded into different trucks or warehouses along the way. While co-mingling and transferring household goods is common, studies show that it increases the likelihood of loss and damage.

This type of multi-home consolidation can also cause longer transit times. It’s common to see a “spread date” of 2-4 weeks for delivery. The reason? Companies wait to fill an entire trailer before it begins traveling.

How Movers Estimate Costs

Price is a key factor to consider with a full-service mover. Most require an in-home estimate (or a full inventory over the phone) before giving a rate. An in-home estimate involves the moving company representative looking at everything in the home to estimate the weight. The weight then determines the price. For an accurate price, they’ll need to look at everything, including the attic, garage, basement and any off-site storage units. Check with the full-service mover to determine if the estimate is binding. If it isn’t, the price could change based on the final weight of the loaded shipment.

Getting a Full-Service Move for a Fraction of the Price

Full-service moving isn’t the only option for a hands-off moving experience. Move affordably with U-Pack! It’s designed as a self-move option where you do the loading and unloading and we do the driving, but we can refer you to moving labor to help just with the big stuff, or to do it all. We’ll even set it all up for you! Get the support you need, at a price you can afford!

Faster Transit Times

Thanks to our efficient transportation network, we can move you virtually anywhere in the U.S. within 2-5 business days. No waiting weeks for your belongings!

No In-Home Estimate

U-Pack bases rates on the space used, not the weight of the shipment. We can estimate the cost based the size of the home without an in-home estimate. No Co-Mingling or Transferring

When you move with U-Pack, your belongings aren’t shipped with other household shipments or transferred to other equipment. They stay where they’re loaded until delivery.

Only Pay for the Services You Need

Add the services you need to customize the move. We can refer you to a network of pre-qualified moving labor service providers for loading or unloading. If you want help with everything, it’s available. Or if you just want to pay for assistance with the big stuff, that’s an option, too.
