Moving from Rochester, NY to Charlotte, NC

Relocating to the Queen City

Charlotte is 700 miles from Rochester, and at first glance, the cities may seem to be worlds apart. It’s more than just a change of pace. It’s North and South. Old and new. Cold and warm. How will Charlotte look to a Rochester transplant? Let’s take a look!

Charlotte at a Glance

Charlotte is a blend of diverse cultures and neighborhoods, each with a distinct vibe. A popular area for young adults is North Davidson (NoDa), a vibrant arts community. More than 30 percent of Charlotte households include children under the age of 18, so family-friendly neighborhoods with excellent schools are in high demand. Charlotte is also home to 10 colleges or universities.

Climate

There’s no need to break out the cold-weather gear once you get to Charlotte. While Rochester averages a whopping 90 inches of snow per year, Charlotte receives less than 4 inches. Winters are mild, summers are steamy, and the spring and fall are pleasant.

Cost of Living

Charlotte, a city of nearly 2.4 million people, is roughly twice the size of Rochester. The median home price is more than $200,000, about $55,000 higher than in Rochester. Average monthly rent is slightly higher in Charlotte as well (just under $900).

Things to Do

There’s always something brewing in Charlotte. Lately, it’s lots of craft beer. North Carolina has more craft breweries than any other Southern state, and new ones keep popping up. They’re grouped by neighborhood, so it’s easy to visit several in one trip. Pair your craft brew with some Carolina-style barbecue or fried chicken and waffles!

Explore these other options to savor more of the city’s flavor:

  • Head Uptown. Check out Discovery Place and the Mint Museum Uptown, then grab a bite from any one of the area’s best restaurants.
  • Get a taste of Charlotte. Visit the 7th Street Public Market, an indoor marketplace just west of the city center. Enjoy a wide selection of local produce, wines, flowers, and sweet and savory treats. Pure Pizza, a city favorite, is known for using ingredients sold in the market!
  • Get Moving. Charlotte has 37 miles of greenways trails for walking, running, biking or rollerblading. Want more of an adrenaline rush? Check out the U.S. National Whitewater Center, a 500-acre facility northwest of downtown with the world’s largest man-made whitewater river. You can also go mountain biking, rock climbing, zip-lining or take on obstacle courses.
  • Cheer on the pros. Take in a race the Charlotte Motor Speedway (get your tickets well ahead of race day) or visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Or catch the NFL’s Panthers and the NBA’s Hornets in action.

Job Market

Charlotte serves as the headquarters for Bank of America and is a major center for Wells Fargo. Other major employers include Lowe’s (headquartered in nearby Mooresville) and American Airlines. The NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Charlotte Motor Speedway are big contributors to both the economy and culture of the area.
