Moving from Houston, TX, to Las Vegas, NV

Leaving Space City for life in Sin City

Houston may be known as “Space City” because it’s home to NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, but Las Vegas has its own space-related trivia. Due to its bright lights, Las Vegas is one of the brightest spots on Earth when viewed from space.

Speaking of space, because of differences in population density between the cities, you might feel more crowded in Vegas with its smaller footprint and more people per square mile. Around 642,000 people call Las Vegas home, while Houston has over 2.3 million residents within its city limits.

When you compare metro populations, Vegas is more than three times smaller than Houston’s 7.1 million, but you’ll experience more tourists in Sin City — around 40 million people annually.

Adjusting to a desert climate

If you’re a fan of the mild winters in Houston with rare snowfall, Vegas won’t disappoint. However, you might be surprised to learn that Vegas’s winter lows can drop to 37 degrees, compared to average winter lows of 43 degrees in Houston.

Summers are milder and more humid in Houston, with highs in the low 90s, compared to those that can reach the mid-100s in Vegas. You’ll have much less rainfall in your new home in Nevada — only around 5 inches annually, compared to 53 inches back in your Texas hometown. Take precautions to protect yourself by staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen when outside in Vegas.

Embrace Vegas nightlife

Vegas is known for 24/7 entertainment options. With casinos, restaurants and shows, there’s something to enjoy for almost everyone. Many hotels have regular shows featuring music artists, musicians and more. Plus, don’t miss these attractions:

  • Bellagio Fountains (also pretty during the day)
  • House of Blues
  • The Vegas Strip
  • XS Night Club

But don’t worry if you need your beauty sleep. There’s plenty to do in Vegas during the day, including parks, museums and children’s attractions.

Finding work in Las Vegas

Due to the city's abundance of hotels and casinos, the entertainment, gaming and tourism industries are supreme in Vegas. There are also ample opportunities in education, government, information technology and warehousing.

The cost of living in Las Vegas is higher than in Houston, but the median salaries in Vegas are higher than the national average.
