Moving from Houston, TX, to Colorado Springs, CO

Finding more space away from Space City

Moving from Houston or “Space City” to Colorado Springs means gaining some space of a different variety. Houston is home to NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, but Colorado Springs is a bit closer to the sky since its elevation is over 6,000 feet, compared to just under 80 feet in Houston.

Adjusting to living at a higher altitude is only one of the many things you can look forward to after moving to “Olympic City.” You’ll also have more space to breathe since the population of Colorado Springs is much smaller than Houston. The city population of Colorado Springs is almost 479,000 people, while Houston has over 2.3 million residents within city limits.

Snow-covered mountain views and cold winters

Did the mild winters in Houston disappoint you while dreams of snow flurries danced in your head? Colorado Springs is great for people who enjoy winter weather and snow-capped mountains. Olympic City residents can view the Southern Rocky Mountains, which are typically snow-capped from November through April.

Houston's winter lows average 43 degrees and snow is rare. Colorado Springs's lows are often around 20 degrees, and the city gets around 57 inches of snow annually.

Summers are much hotter and humid in Houston, with highs in the low 90s, compared to highs in the low 80s in Colorado Springs. You’ll experience less rainfall in your new home in Colorado—around 18 inches annually, compared to 53 inches back in your Texas hometown.

Living and working in a new city

The North American Aerospace Defense Command Center (NORAD) is located nearby on Cheyenne Mountain, and the city has military bases. Other major employment opportunities include healthcare institutions, local governments, schools and military contractors.

The city has 80 public and private schools for children.
