Moving from Boston, MA, to Cleveland, OH

Moving from the East Coast to the Midwest

When relocating from “Beantown” Boston to “The Forest City” of Cleveland, Ohio, it’s good to be prepared for cultural and geographical differences. Cleveland is located about 640 miles west of Boston and is a smaller city with roughly half the population (372,624 residents, according to the 2020 U.S. Census). But don’t let its smaller size fool you; Cleveland has plenty to offer new residents if you know where to look!

Cleveland’s artistic culture

In Cleveland, you’ll find Playhouse Square, which is among the largest performing arts centers in the U.S. and includes four different theaters. There are many other theaters in the city, including Karamu House, Near West Theatre and the Cleveland Public Theatre. The Cleveland Orchestra is world renowned, and Rock music fans can visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The city also has a rich history in Hip Hop, Jazz, Polka and R&B music.

If art museums are more your style, don’t miss the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland.

Waterfront views and outdoor fun await you

If you’re worried about missing the ocean near Boston, don’t fret. Cleveland is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie. While it’s not the ocean, you’ll experience freshwater activities at the lake. Kayaking, paddle boarding, rowing and sailing are popular during summer. And for winter activities like downhill skiing and snowboarding, Cleveland is near ski resorts Boston Mills/Brandywine and Alpine Valley. There are also plenty of parks in the city for biking and hiking.

Working and learning in Cleveland

Although the average salaries are slightly lower than national averages in Cleveland, the cost of living is also significantly lower than in Boston. The biochemistry, health care and manufacturing industries offer the best job opportunities for Cleveland residents. The city has 164 public schools and 227 private schools for children, and adults can seek higher education at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University.
