Ashtabula Local Knowledge

If you’re moving to Ashtabula, here are some interesting facts to help you get acquainted to your new city:

  • The home of abolitionist William Hubbard was often the last stop for escaped slaves as they made their way to freedom in Canada before the Civil War. Today, the Hubbard House is a museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Ashtabula County features 19 covered bridges — including the longest and shortest in the U.S. — and nine were built before 1900.

  • A 275-pound piece of glass was found on the beach between Ashtabula Harbor and Conneaut Harbor in 2017. It’s on display at the Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum.

  • Into Victorian artifacts? The Victorian Perambulator Museum & Art Gallery is the only place in the world dedicated to early wicker baby and doll carriages. You can also see a variety of children’s dolls, dollhouses, toys and books.
