Moving from Jersey City, NJ to Las Vegas, NV

Gateway to a New Start: Leaving Jersey City for Las Vegas

Jersey City has a rich history. It’s called “The Gateway Region” because of how many U.S. citizens have emigrated through there. If you’re relocating from Jersey City to Las Vegas, you may miss the proximity to New York City (four miles away by car or ferry). But you’ll be trading that for a much warmer year-round climate, a lower cost of living and more elbow room. Plus, there’s much more to Vegas than its reputation as “Sin City.” Read on to learn more.

The Heat Is On

If you enjoy a warm and dry climate, then Viva Las Vegas! Summers can be brutally hot, but temperatures are mild the rest of the year. Because of this, residents can enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Navigating Las Vegas

While public transit is practically a necessity in Jersey City, most Las Vegas residents get around by car. The monorail runs from end to end along the 4.2-mile Strip, and it’s easy to find cabs.

Beyond the Bright Lights

Las Vegas draws 43 million tourists each year, but it’s also a thriving family-friendly city. Jersey City transplants can find wall-to-wall activity on the Strip, but more room to roam on the outskirts. Las Vegas also has many quiet, suburban communities, world-class restaurants, cultural offerings, and opportunities to enjoy nature.

Career Opportunities

The top industries are tourism and casino gaming, but the Clark County School District and Clark County government employ the most residents.

Cost of Living

New Vegas residents can expect to pay about half the cost of a mortgage or rent in Jersey City. The average home in Las Vegas costs $232,500 while average rent runs just over $1,000.

Things To Do

Las Vegas is known worldwide for its casinos, shows and food – and by all means, enjoy those! But there are many other fun and exciting attractions to enjoy. Here are some things you won’t want to miss:

Gondola ride at The Venetian. Get a taste of Venice in the middle of the Strip with a gondola ride along the Grand Canal.

Fountain show at Bellagio. These remarkable “dancing fountains” have served as a beautiful backdrop for many movies, including Ocean’s 11. Enjoy a free light and water show every 15-30 minutes.

Fremont Street Experience. This impressive downtown light show (also free) will stimulate your senses with 12.5 million LED lamps and a 550,000-watt sound system.

Mob Museum. While you’re downtown, learn about the city’s sketchy history at Las Vegas’ former federal courthouse.

Hoover Dam. More than a million people tour this engineering marvel each year. The massive concrete structure has helped provide power to Nevada, Arizona and California since 1935.

Red Rock Canyon. This National Conservation area has a 13-mile scenic car route through the desert, along with many hiking and biking trails.
