Moving to Las Vegas, Nevada?

Known for its “strip” of resort hotels and casinos, Las Vegas is one of the most visited places in the United States. Online searches will produce multiple results for hotels and casinos, but if you’re moving to Las Vegas, Nevada you’ll need to know more about the day-to-day living.

As you might have guessed, the majority of the city’s economy is driven by tourism. Besides casinos and hotels, there are convention centers, shopping malls and restaurants that support the Las Vegas economy.

Though Nevada has a slightly higher cost of living than the national average, it is one of the few states in the U.S. with no state income taxes. The unemployment rate is also slightly higher than average, but the service industry is in constant need of help. The city is home to several call centers, which hire new employees every day. You can also find work as a food server on The Strip or in hospitality at one of the many casino resorts.

Location and traffic

Las Vegas is surrounded by mountain ranges and open terrain. The city encompasses nearly 140 square miles and includes several suburbs. If you want to avoid the lights and traffic of The Strip for the majority of the year, check out the communities on the outskirts of the city. Henderson and Summerlin are less populated than areas near The Strip and tend to be more family-friendly.

Because of its connection to surrounding smaller communities, Las Vegas experiences a considerable amount of traffic, but an average commute time of only 25 minutes. It’s best to own a vehicle, since the city extends several miles.

With a simple grid system and variety of shopping and eating areas, downtown Las Vegas is great for walking, instead of driving. For public transportation, the city is served by the RTC Transit bus system.

Desert weather

Because Las Vegas lies in the Mojave Desert, you can expect a hot, dry climate. The city only receives about four inches of precipitation annually. For the majority of the year, you’ll enjoy sunshine and warm weather. From June to September, average temperatures are in the upper 80s and 90s, with low humidity. Winters are short and mild, with December average temperatures in the mid-40s.

Las Vegas is part of the Clark County School District. As the fifth-largest school district in the country, there are more than 320,000 students enrolled in grades K-12. The College of Southern Nevada calls Las Vegas home and is the third-largest community college in the U.S. by enrollment. The city also has a campus for the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Las Vegas is currently known as one of the best “foodie” cities in the country. There are several famous chefs and celebrity favorite restaurants throughout the city. Las Vegas offers hundreds of options for any kind of food including Hawaiian, Brazilian, French, Korean and German. While some of the restaurants are more high-end, there are still plenty of small, affordable shops to get delicious food and drinks.

For a quick meal any time of day, try Desi Burrito, which offers a combination of Indian and Mexican food in their unique burrito-shaped drive-thru. If you’re a coffee lover, and a Harry Potter fan, check out Bad Owl Coffee in the community of Henderson. Their “butter beer latte” and magical decor pays homage to the Potter franchise. One of the more famous eateries in Las Vegas is Guy Fieri’s El Burro Borracho. The restaurant offers a variety of Hispanic food with an American twist, such as “El Gringo” which is a beef burger with Mexicana mac ‘n’ cheese, bacon, burro sauce, tortillas and other special burger toppings on a torta bun.

Things to do for all ages

Despite its nickname “Sin City,” Las Vegas offers fun activities for people of all ages. The city has a variety of parks for skating, hiking and picnicking. If you enjoy golf, Las Vegas is the perfect place for you to check out more than sixty courses varying in size! If you’re a pet owner, you’ll be happy to know that Las Vegas also has five dog parks.

Home to several museums, art galleries and performing arts centers, Las Vegas offers a unique cultural experience. You can listen to the Las Vegas Philharmonic at the Smith Center for Performing Arts or check out the Nevada Ballet Theatre, located only twenty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. If you have kids, don’t miss the Discovery Children’s Museum!

Did you know Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas has the largest video screen in the world? Known as “Viva Vision,” the screen displays various light shows throughout the day and night for tourists and locals to enjoy!
