Population. Tacoma is home to more than 200,000 residents, making it the county seat of Pierce County. It is the second largest city on the Puget Sound and the third largest city in the state of Washington.

Location. As mentioned above, Tacoma is located on the Puget Sound, just 32 miles away from Seattle, 31 miles from Olympia, and 58 miles from Mount Rainer National Park.

Business. Tacoma serves as the center of business for the South Sound region. With this comes lots of job opportunity in high-tech business. The city is the 7th busiest container shipping/handling port in the U.S., shipping forest products, electronics, apples, lumber, and automobiles. As a major gateway of international trade, port activity generates more than $477 million in revenue for the city. Tacoma is also plays an important role in agricultural and forestry. In fact, the first business established in the area was a saw mill business. And of course, tourism is a driving factor for the area’s economic development.

City of Destiny. Tacoma is called the “City of Destiny” because the area was chosen to be the western terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The railroad connected with Commencement Bay, making Tacoma’s motto “When rail meets sail.”

Progressive outlook. Tacoma is highly progressive and liberal. If that’s your style, then you’ve made a good choice with Tacoma. In 2012, The Advocate gave the city the title of “Gayest City in America.” Also in 2012, Washington State passed a bill allowing LGBT couples to marry.

Military. The city is located near several military bases, including Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Weather. If you like cooler weather, Tacoma is the place for you. You’ll get about 39 inches of rain each year and 8 inches of snow. The July high is around 75 degrees and the January low is around 37 degrees.

Education. If you’re moving to Tacoma with kids, they’ll easily fit into Tacoma Public Schools. The district has 35 elementary schools, nine middle schools, five high schools, and 14 alternative learning sites. The district also has two Montessori schools for K-8.
