Edmonton is a cultural, governmental, and educational city. Its nickname is “The Festival City” because it hosts many festivals year-round. It was home to the largest mall in North America, West Edmonton Mall, until 2004. It is home to Fort Edmonton Park, Canada’s largest living history museum. In 2004, Edmonton celebrated the centennial of its incorporation as a city.
The weather in Edmonton
Edmonton experiences extreme seasonal temps, with a dry-humid continental climate. You’ll get warm summers and cold winters of course. Winters stay in the teens, while summers remain in the 60s. Winters last from November to March, and spring and autumn are fairly short. Edmonton has a dry climate, and received about 18 inches of precipitation per year. Thunderstorms are frequent in the summer, some even producing tornados, so be sure to know your tornado safety precautions.
Parks
Edmonton has the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America. Its river valley is 22 times larger than New York City’s Central Park! There are 11 lakes, 14 ravines, and 22 major parks, most accessible with bike and walking trails.
Festivals
- The Works Art and Design Festival occurs late June to early July. It showcases Canadian and international art and design.
- The Edmonton International Street Performer’s Festival takes place mid-July and showcases worldwide street performances.
- The main summer festival is K-Days, formerly Klondike Days. It includes carnival rides, music, trade shows, and daily fireworks.
Education
There are three public school districts in Edmonton that provide K-12 education. There are many private schools in the area as well. For higher education, you can enroll in the University of Alberta. It has more than 38,000 students, 200 undergrad programs, and 170 grad programs.
