It is located in Lake County within the bounds of the former Lake Chicago and is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city consists of four communities including Central, North, and South Hammond as well as Hessville, with each community incorporating several sub-communities. New residents may be interested to know that the city of Hammond is adjacent to six rivers and lakes, most notably Lake Michigan, as well as 10 cities, towns and villages. The city was home to The Hammond Pros, one of America’s first professional football teams.

Getting around in Hammond. In Hammond, all roads lead to Chicago. The I-90 toll road as well as Borman Expressway (I-80/94) are major roadways that both lead west towards Chicago, just 40 minutes away. The closest airport is Gary/Chicago International, located in Gary, Indiana. Public transportation in Hammond includes bus service provided by Northwest Indiana Regional Bus Authority, as well as an Amtrak Wolverine station and Pace pickup, both with routes leading to Chicago. The South Shore Electric Line is a commuter rail line from Chicago to South Bend that has a station on Hohman Avenue in Hammond.
Dining in Hammond. El Taco Real is a favorite Mexican restaurant that keeps the locals coming back. Said to have the best pork around town, the restaurant offers a number of stylish, authentic dishes priced moderately for the value. The restaurant features a full bar and a casual ambience that’s perfect for groups and children—try the queso fundido! Other local favorite eateries in Hammond include Johnel’s Restaurant, Bob’s Shrimp, Bread Basket, Jack Binion’s Steakhouse, and House of Pizza.
Recreational Hammond. While Hammond and the surrounding areas may not be known for premier shopping and high fashion boutiques, there are several local shopping locations that are just as fun. River Oaks Center is a mall located in Calumet City, Illinois and is only about ten minutes from Hammond. The mall is home to more than 125 specialty shops and eateries including Carson Pirie Scott, Auntie Anne’s and the Gap. Hammond Salvage & Resale releases your inner eccentric with everything from vintage photo albums to low-priced DVDs, lawnmowers and bed frames and antiques. Basically, it’s the “holy grail of junk shopping”. Then of course there is Chicago; the closest city that has it all and that comes packed with the big city feel, all just a short drive away.
The climate of Hammond. Hammond is fairly humid year-round due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. The average high temperature occurs in July at 77.4 degrees and the average low temperature occurs in February at 29.8 degrees. The city sees close to 44 inches of snow annually with the most falling in January (11 inches), as well as about 39 inches of rain, the most in June (4.5 inches). That said Hammond’s climate yields mostly cloudy days and very windy conditions not unlike The Windy City itself.
