Moving Tips: Clean the apartment when leaving

It is important to clean well before moving out.

It is important to clean well before moving out.

It may seem simple, but cleaning an apartment after packing up and moving to a new dwelling is important. There is a belief that you should leave a place cleaner than you first saw it,, and this doesn't ring more true than for an apartment.

Most apartment setups have security deposits, and if you want your money back - and think you deserve it - you should do what you can to get your apartment as clean as possible. The money will likely come in handy when moving to a new apartment or home.

First, make sure the bathroom is clean. This means not only cleaning the mirrors, but really scrubbing the sink, toilet, bathroom and floor. It is important to ensure that there are no traces of grime, mildew or mold. A clean bathroom is not only good for the landlord, but it is common courtesy for the new residents in the home.

The kitchen can also be a tricky area, but should be cleaned with the same care. This means that you need to scrub the sink, make sure there is no traces of food in the drain plug and that the faucet is cleaned well. Also, you should clean both the inside and top of the oven, which could take some time. Washing the counter tops and mopping the floor afterward will make the room look much improved.

Be sure to look at the walls to make sure there are no major issues with them. Washing the walls could take cobwebs and other built-up dirt off, as well. If there are noticeable holes from nails or tacks, it may be smart to putty them and add some new paint to these areas, especially if the apartment owner did not want items hung up in the room.

Finally, vacuum the entire apartment. This is probably best completed once all items are packed and moved out. If you do this well, the entire apartment will look in great shape. Also, take pictures of the apartment, so that if there are problems later on, you will have proof that the area was not damaged when you left. Remind the property manager of any issues that were there before you moved in.

It is important for you to not wait until the last minute when cleaning these items. By spreading it out over the final few days of living in the apartment, the process can be much easier.
