Moving to New York, NY?

If the Big Apple is calling your name, what are you waiting for? You probably knew (or assumed) that New York City is the most populous city in the United States; but did you know that as many as 800 languages are spoken within the city? Full of culture, fashion, and entertainment, NYC offers something for just about everyone.

There are many boroughs and areas in New York City including The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Each one of these boroughs (and the other various areas such as Greenwich Village or the Upper East Side) all have their own personality.

Things to do- Entertainment

There is so much in New York, that it would be impossible to summarize everything in this short article. However, rest assured that you will be able to do anything you can imagine here. From world-class entertainment from headlining concerts to Broadway plays to comedians to live music, it is all here!

Cuisine

If you are a foodie, New York is home to thousands of eateries, including those of the top rated chefs in the world. Basically any ethnic cuisine you could imagine is available in New York, with many being within ethnic neighborhoods, such as China Town or Little Italy.

Recreation

If you enjoy being outdoors, Central Park offers 843 acres of urban park space for any number of activities. There is a wooden section perfect for bird watchers, rowboats and kayaks, trails for runners, bikers, skaters and cyclists, areas for bouldering, ice skating, playgrounds, and a zoo.

Education in New York

The New York City Department of Education runs the city’s public schools. More than 1.1 million students are taught in over 1,700 schools within the city. Many students attend private schools. There are specialized schools such as Murry Bergtraum High School, which is a business high school, or LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, which the movie Fame was based on. There are private schools catering to many different religions and educational frameworks as well.

Transportation

Most New Yorkers take public transportation. There are cabs, buses, subways, and ferries that can get you anywhere you need to go within the city. If you do bring a vehicle, it must be registered to your residence in the city in order to qualify for resident parking tax exemptions. You can find out more about resident parking here.

Live Load in New York City
Dan R.
This is the best moving option next to a full service moving company. Everyone from reservations to the drivers(especially the drivers) were friendly, very helpful, and proficient. The only down side was the live load in New York City, but that comes with loading there! Next time I move, you can guarantee I will use ABF U-Pack again!

I would not recommend ABF to anyone moving in the New York Metro area. I did not learn of the 4 hour live load until I was at the point of making my reservation. This information should have been shared when I initially made my request for an estimate.

Huge disappointment for a NYC move!!!!!
Nicole
My husband and I just moved from Seattle and we had no problem on the Seattle load side. We had 2 cubes - one going to my parents house in KS and the second one coming to us in NYC. But ever since it left the terminal in Kent, WA it has been nothing but dealing with an unorganized company. We had multiple messages left on our phones saying our first cube (slated for KC, MO) had arrived and we needed to come and unload (we now live in NYC) and two messages saying we needed to come load our 2nd cube in KC for NY. Just called because we wanted a live unload in NYC, later to find out they only do live unloads for their trailers and not their cubes. Now our cube will be at a terminal in Carlstadt, NJ and we’ll have to rent a U-Haul, drive out to NJ and drive our belongings back to NYC, unload and then return the U-Haul. To make it even worse, the cube is currently in Carlisle, PA and U-Pack said it will mostly arrive today (its only 194 mi from Carlstadt, about 4 hours), BUT we won’t be able to come to the terminal to unload until MONDAY!!! They don’t allow people to unload on the weekends! Guess what U-Pack, that’s insanely inconvenient for anyone who has a M-F job! So come Monday, we’ll have been without our belongings for 2 whole weeks! I’d never recommend this company to anyone needing to move to NYC. Especially not to my 2 coworkers who have storage on the west coast and have already asked me if they should use U-Pack. Absolutely unacceptable!

U-Pack was able to work everything out for us and we’ll be able to unload our cube in Carlstadt, NJ this weekend. Thanks for accommodating us, we really appreciate your help. 5 stars!
