Tips for adjusting to high altitude

Because Colorado Springs sits at an elevation of 6,035 feet, it’s important to be prepared for the altitude. Remember, health and age both play a factor in how altitude affects you. Follow these tips for adjusting to high altitude:

  • If possible, reach your destination slowly; don’t try to go from the flatlands to high altitude all in one day.
  • Drink plenty of liquids, especially water so you don’t dehydrate.
  • Avoid drinking excessive alcohol or ingesting high quantities of salt for a couple of days before and after arrival, but do eat potassium rich foods like broccoli, bananas, avocado, granola, etc.
  • After arriving, take it easy for a few days in order to adjust to your new surroundings, and try going for short hikes or bike rides to build your endurance.
  • Treat symptoms (i.e. pain reliever for headache, motion sickness medicine for nausea, etc.)
