The Perks of Moving to Victoria, BC

Culture: Victoria is a culturally rich city. Its mix of German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Aboriginal cultural groups make for a vibrant scene, thriving with diversity of cuisine, arts, and language.

Arts and Entertainment: The city is home to the Pacific Opera Victoria, one of Canada's leading opera companies. You can hear one of many performances by the Victoria Symphony at the Royal Theatre. Or, go to the McPherson Playhouse for a play or musical. Victoria also abounds in museums and art galleries.

The Outdoors: British Columbia's scenery can be aptly described as incredible. Majestic, snow-covered mountains tower nearby, inviting hikers and climbers. An amazing variety of wildlife and sea life astonishes onlookers on land and at sea. Whether you are in the mood for flowery alpine meadows, old-growth forests, or spectacular waterfalls, the area holds many delights. You can even take in the extraplanetary sights at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

Sports: Watch the local hockey team, the Victoria Salmon Kings. Or check out some football, soccer or lacrosse. If you like to play instead of just watch, there is a variety of golf courses and nearby alpine activities.

There is passenger rail service, bus service (including double-decker buses) throughout the city, and plenty of bike lines and paths. The city is very accommodating of eco-friendly transportation.

Education: Many of the elementary schools offer alternative French immersion programs. Post-secondary education centers include University of Victoria, Camosun College, Royal Roads University, Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific and Sprott-Shaw Community College.

The city receives about 10 inches of snow each year. The good news is that it doesn’t remain on the ground for very long, so you’re not confined to your home.
