Of course, December, January, and February, the skies can drop down as much as 95 inches of snow in one single month. If snow is what you love, you’ll be overwhelmed in Valdez! Valdez’s average yearly temperature is a very cold 28 F, with temperatures during winter months as low as 0 F and summer highs ranging in the 50s. Be sure to bring your warm sweaters and snow boots along! 

Getting an Education in Valdez -
Public schools in Valdez are organized under the Valdez City School District. Within Valdez, there is one elementary school, Hermon Hutchens Elementary which serves grades PK-6; one junior high school, George H Gilson Junior High School for grades 7-8; and one high school, Valdez High School, for grades 9-12. For upper level education, the city of Valdez is home to Prince William Sound Community College (PWSCC) offering associate degrees and occupational certificates for its students.   

Snow Removal and Traveling in Valdez -
A concern to those who are new to Valdez would be how the huge volumes of snow would be removed from the streets of their new home. The City Shop has a system in place to make the roads of Valdez safe for its residents with their many forms of heavy equipment and their specially trained crew to do the work! To date, there has never been a day of school called off due to snow; that speaks well of the City Shop and their workers!

Navigating your way in and around Valdez is fairly simple in your personal vehicle. Valdez is connected to the Richardson Highway going from Valdez to Fairbanks, which is approximately 364 miles north. Additionally, if you travel from Valdez to Anchorage, you’ll cover a distance of almost 300 miles. However, if you fly to Fairbanks or Anchorage, you’ll have a travel time of one hour to Fairbanks and only 40 minutes to Anchorage. Currently, there are no transit systems in the city of Valdez, but walking, biking, or carpooling might be other desirable options you might consider.

Attractions and Dining in Valdez -
One of the main attractions to see in Valdez is the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of their many glaciers! Among the most accessible and beautiful glaciers in the area are Columbia, Meares, Worthington, Shoup, and Valdez. Viewing their beauty is breathtaking, but you can also plan a hike or an ice climb tour! There are countless outdoor activities in the area as well as some local attractions.  The local attractions you will most enjoy include: Valdez Museum and Historical Archive, Raven Spirit Art Co-op and Gallery, and the Maxine and Jesse Whitney Museum.

If you’re looking for some great seafood, Valdez is the place to be! Along with their delicious food are their spectacular views while you dine! They can’t be beat! Some of the local favorite dining spots include T.H.C. Off the Hook Bar and Grill, Alaska Halibut House, Totem Inn, Fu Kung Chinese Restaurant, and No Name Pizza Company!
